Yes—if your catalog changes infrequently and customers need a quote before an order can be finalized, a static catalog with a WhatsApp enquiry cart can work without a database. In a case study published on DEV Community in 2026, a Turkish outdoor LED seller reported building a 250-product catalog around static Next.js pages, repository-held product data, and one SKU-keyed price file. The cart carries product choices and quantities into a conversation rather than processing payment or reserving stock.
What “no database” means in this catalog
The case-study author reports 250 products across 32 categories and 750 SKUs, including pole motifs, illuminated figures, arches, hanging ornaments, and LED sold by the metre. The reported design keeps product information in JSON and TypeScript files in the code repository, then builds pages from that data. This is a description of the author’s implementation, not an independently inspected codebase. DEV Community case study
There are three reported data layers: catalog JSON files under data/catalog/, a shared typed-access module, and data/fiyatlar.json, keyed by SKU for net prices. During the build, the site calculates VAT-inclusive display prices. Updating catalog details or prices means changing repository data and rebuilding and redeploying the site; it is not a live edit to a running database.
That trade works when products and prices change on a manageable schedule and the site does not need to maintain live inventory, customer accounts, or authoritative order records. The 2026 case study also reports 37 products with a single variant, one indication of why a straightforward catalog data model may suit this particular shop.

How one price JSON file stays in sync with the cart
The key design choice is that the cart stores references to products, not a copy of their prices. According to the case study, browser storage under localStorage key ls_cart_v1 holds a SKU and quantity for each line, with optional metres or a note where relevant. When the cart is rendered, the application looks up the current price using the SKU.
- Price source:
data/fiyatlar.jsonsupplies net prices keyed by SKU; the build calculates VAT-inclusive figures for display. - Cart state: the browser retains product identifiers and quantities, not prices.
- After a price edit: once the updated data has been rebuilt and deployed, the cart can render using the new price rather than preserving a price copied into an older cart.
This reduces stale-price risk in a saved cart, but it is not a price guarantee or a stock reservation. A customer may see a displayed figure and later need the seller to confirm the current total, especially when delivery or installation is quoted separately.

- Reliable DECT 6.0 digital technology enhances audio quality for ultra-clear, buzz-free communication.
- Monochrome LCD display for clear viewing.
There is also a Next.js implementation detail: localStorage is a browser API, so code must access it in a client component after it runs in the browser, not during server prerendering. The Next.js static export guide documents that browser-only Web APIs are unavailable during prerendering. Next.js static exports guide
What static export in Next.js 16 provides—and what it does not
In the Next.js 16.3.8 documentation, output: 'export' directs next build to generate route HTML and static assets in an out directory, which can be served by a compatible static web server. Server Components can run during the build, and static GET route handlers are supported; the output is still a collection of static files rather than an application server handling each visitor’s request. The same guide lists runtime-dependent features that static export does not support, including request-dependent route handlers, cookies, server actions, and Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR). In practical terms, a static deployment does not itself provide a place to keep real-time stock, per-customer server state, payment activity, or a server-side record of submitted orders. Those requirements call for a server-backed component or a commerce platform rather than just more static files.
How the WhatsApp cart hands off an enquiry
The case study reports product enquiries containing the product name, SKU, selected option, quantity, VAT-inclusive displayed price, and a prompt for the customer’s delivery city or district. For a cart, the site creates a prefilled message and opens a WhatsApp conversation. The customer still has to send the drafted message; opening the link does not place an order.

WhatsApp’s click-to-chat instructions use a wa.me URL with a full international-format phone number, omitting the plus sign, brackets, and dashes. Prefilled message text is supplied through a URL-encoded ?text= parameter. WhatsApp Help Center: How to use click to chat
The case-study author says the implementation switches to a compact cart message when the encoded text exceeds 1,800 characters. The reported fallback keeps SKUs, quantities, and line totals and includes a shareable cart link. That 1,800-character threshold is a project choice, not an official WhatsApp message limit.
When this model fits—and when it becomes a constraint
| Need | Static catalog and WhatsApp handoff | Server-backed shop or commerce platform |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog and price changes | Change repository data, then rebuild and redeploy. | Can support runtime editing, depending on the chosen system. |
| Order pricing and fulfillment | Customer asks for a quote; seller confirms final terms in conversation. | Can calculate and record an order through configured checkout and fulfillment workflows. |
| Stock and customer state | No live stock or per-customer server state is provided by static export itself. | Can persist these records when the platform and its configuration support them. |
| Order handling | A person must respond, confirm details, and complete the sale through the business’s process. | Some steps can be automated, but setup and operational requirements depend on the system. |
The WhatsApp approach makes sense when a human quote is part of the sale—for example, because delivery and installation depend on location or product details—and incoming enquiries can be handled promptly. It is less suitable when customers need a confirmed shipping cost, payment, and order confirmation in one uninterrupted checkout.
For the LED seller in the case study, shipping and installation are quoted separately. That makes the cart an enquiry and order handoff, not a complete checkout. The business must monitor incoming conversations, verify the order and current price, provide the final quote, and record or fulfill the sale using its own process. If delayed replies, missed enquiries, or manual order recording become unacceptable, those are signs the workflow needs stronger order-management support.
