If your HDMI adapter is not working, first check whether the source device can send video through the port you are using. Then check the adapter and cable’s supported video mode, reseat the connections, select the correct HDMI input and computer display mode, and investigate power or protected-content requirements only if they apply. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output.
Start by identifying the connection
Note what is connected at each end: for example, a laptop’s USB-C port to a TV’s HDMI input, or a wireless display adapter plugged into the TV. Adapters are directional and designed for particular types of conversion; an HDMI-to-VGA converter is not interchangeable with a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
If you are using an Apple Digital AV adapter, remove HDMI extension cables and converters during troubleshooting. Apple notes that some conversions, including to DVI, composite, or component, are incompatible with this setup. See Apple’s Digital AV adapter troubleshooting guidance.
Why does my TV or monitor say “No signal”?
Confirm that the source port supports video
For USB-C, check the exact device model and the specific port. Some USB-C ports handle data or charging but do not send video. Microsoft advises confirming that the PC, display, and cable support the relevant DisplayPort or MHL Alternate Mode, and connecting the adapter directly to the compatible port where possible. A hub or dock can complicate diagnosis.

Use the device maker’s specifications to confirm video output for that port before replacing an adapter. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance explains the Alternate Mode requirement.
Reseat the connections and check the display input
- Turn on the TV or monitor and confirm it is set to the HDMI input where the adapter is connected.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends of the adapter and HDMI cable.
- For diagnosis, connect the display directly to the source or adapter, without an extension cable, hub, or dock.
- If possible, try a known-working HDMI cable or check the cable with another working setup.
Apple also recommends disconnecting and reconnecting its adapter and removing extensions or incompatible converters while troubleshooting. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting steps cover connection and display checks.

Choose the computer’s external-display mode
On Windows, press Windows+P and select Extend or Duplicate, depending on what you want to do. A connected monitor may not show the expected output if Windows is set to another display mode. The number of independent external displays can also be limited by the computer’s graphics hardware; an HDMI splitter duplicates one signal rather than creating independent displays.
Why is the picture dark or lower resolution than expected?
The source device, adapter, HDMI cable, and display must all support the resolution and refresh rate you want. If one link in that chain cannot handle the selected mode, the display may remain dark or operate at a lower resolution or refresh rate. Apple describes this limitation in its guidance for an external display that is dark or low resolution.

- Check the specifications for the source’s video output, adapter, cable, and display.
- Temporarily select a lower resolution or refresh rate. If that works, a mode limit in the chain may be involved.
- Compare the supported modes across all four parts before buying a replacement.
Do not assume that a display’s advertised maximum is supported by every adapter or cable in the connection.
Why does the desktop work but a film or streaming app fail?
A working desktop and a failed film, show, or streaming app point to a different problem than a completely dead adapter. Protected video may require an HDCP-compatible connection and display, and an app may not support every adapter. Check HDCP support for the source, adapter, and display, along with the app’s compatibility information. Apple explains these limits in its Digital AV adapter guidance and Mac-to-HDMI guidance.

What if the picture works but the sound does not?
Select the connected display or its audio system as the output device in the computer’s sound settings. Microsoft includes checking audio output among the troubleshooting steps for its Wireless Display Adapter; the exact setting names depend on the operating system and device.

Check the instructions for the exact adapter. Some powered or wireless display adapters use HDMI for the display connection and a separate USB connection for power; that does not mean every passive HDMI adapter needs its own power supply. Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter troubleshooting guide covers its product’s HDMI and USB power connections, setup, and firmware. Apply those steps only to that adapter or follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

When should you replace the adapter or cable?
Consider replacement only after confirming that the source port outputs video, the display is on the correct input, the connections and display mode are correct, and the requested resolution and refresh rate are supported throughout the chain. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is appropriate only when the source’s specific USB-C port supports video output. Apple documents its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for supported Mac computers and Thunderbolt- or USB-C-equipped iPad models; that example is not a compatibility guarantee for other devices.
Choose a replacement based on the source model and port, the display mode you need, adapter power requirements, and HDCP needs if you watch protected content. Replace the HDMI cable only if testing implicates it or its specifications do not support the required mode. Official support guidance does not establish failure rates or comparative reliability for HDMI adapters, so it cannot identify a universally best model.
