There is no single CPU that is best for every professional video-editing and graphic-design workflow. For Windows versions of Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, Adobe recommends recent Intel processors with Quick Sync or newer AMD Ryzen and Threadripper families; for Photoshop, it specifies a multicore processor but does not name a winning model. Choose by application, footage codec, resolution, and the rest of your workstation—not core count alone.

Which CPU should you choose?

Start with the applications and work you actually do. Premiere Pro can benefit more from additional cores, while After Effects places greater weight on clock speed, according to Adobe’s Choosing your hardware: Professional video & audio guide. Codec support also matters: Adobe identifies H.264 and H.265/HEVC as processor-intensive formats and notes that Intel Quick Sync can accelerate these workflows in Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Adobe’s current Windows recommendations establish compatible processor families, not a performance ranking. Its Premiere Pro requirements, updated September 16, 2026, recommend Intel 11th-generation or newer processors with Quick Sync, or AMD Ryzen 3000-series/Threadripper 3000-series and newer. Its After Effects requirements, updated June 17, 2026, give the same processor-family guidance. Those recommendations apply to the versions listed on each requirements page; they do not prove that one specific Intel or AMD model is fastest.

A high-end example: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X

AMD lists the Ryzen 9 9950X as a desktop processor with 16 cores, 32 threads, a 4.3 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.7 GHz, a 170 W default TDP, and an AM5 socket. AMD’s product page lists an August 15, 2024 launch date. These specifications make it a plausible high-end candidate to investigate, but they are not creative-app benchmark results and do not establish that it outperforms particular alternatives or offers better value.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core, 32-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
  • 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, The most processing power you can get in mainstream desktop
  • Can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
  • Cooler not included, Liquid cooler with 280 millimeter or larger radiator recommended. Max Temps:95°C
  • 4.7 GHz max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 72 MB of game cache, ddr-3200 support
  • For the advanced socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on x570 motherboards

The 9950X requires an AM5-compatible motherboard. AMD says a thermal solution is not included and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance, so account for a separate cooler and platform costs when considering it. See AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X specifications.

Match the processor to your applications

Premiere Pro: consider cores and codec support

For Premiere Pro, Adobe’s hardware guide says multiple cores have more impact than clock speed. Its 2020 guide described eight cores as an ideal general balance for Premiere Pro, while noting that scaling varies with the task. Treat that as broad, dated vendor guidance—not a current universal target or evidence that a particular current CPU is optimal. If you edit H.264 or H.265/HEVC footage, check whether Quick Sync is supported and useful in your actual workflow rather than assuming that more CPU cores alone will solve playback or export constraints.

After Effects: clock speed matters more

Adobe’s guide says clock speed matters more for After Effects than it does for Premiere Pro. That distinction can help when choosing between processors, but it is not a substitute for application-specific benchmarks: composition complexity, effects, previews, and the rest of the system affect performance.

Photoshop and graphic design: avoid buying by video-editing rules

For Photoshop 27.x and later, Adobe specifies a multicore Intel, AMD, or Windows ARM processor. It does not identify a preferred model or publish a CPU ranking in its requirements. For image-focused work, consider the size of the files you handle, the filters and operations you use, multitasking, and your graphics and display setup. A processor chosen for intensive video exports may be unnecessary for a design workflow that does not place comparable demands on the CPU. Adobe recommends 16 GB or more of RAM for Photoshop 27.x and later; that is a memory recommendation, not a CPU requirement.

Check the whole workstation before upgrading the CPU

A CPU upgrade will not resolve every editing bottleneck. Adobe’s hardware guide places RAM, GPU, and storage ahead of the CPU in its upgrade priorities. Its current Premiere Pro guidance recommends 16 GB of RAM for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher workflows, an 8 GB GPU, an internal SSD for the application and cache, and a separate high-speed media drive. After Effects’ current requirements recommend 16 GB for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher.

Use those figures as application- and resolution-specific recommendations, not as guarantees of performance. Check that the motherboard, memory, cooler, power supply, operating system, GPU, and storage are suitable for both the processor and your projects. For a CPU comparison to be meaningful, look for tests using the applications, codecs, resolution, and export or preview tasks closest to your own.

How to compare candidate CPUs responsibly

  1. List your main applications and tasks. Separate Premiere Pro exports and timeline playback, After Effects previews and compositions, Photoshop work, and simultaneous multitasking.
  2. Identify your footage and formats. Note whether you regularly work with H.264/H.265/HEVC and whether Quick Sync support is relevant to the software and media you use.
  3. Set your resolution and system needs. Compare Adobe’s RAM, GPU, and storage recommendations with your current workstation, especially for 4K and higher video work.
  4. Compare complete platform cost and compatibility. Include the motherboard and socket, cooling, power requirements, memory, and any parts you must replace. A CPU’s retail price alone does not capture upgrade cost.
  5. Use current, reproducible application benchmarks before ranking exact models. Prefer results that disclose application version, codec, resolution, export settings, memory, GPU, and test date. Check current local prices separately before making a value judgment.

The available official guidance supports choosing by workload and compatibility, but it does not establish a current fastest or best-value CPU across Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop. Avoid treating processor specifications or vendor family recommendations as proof of comparative performance.

Account for announced future Adobe compatibility changes

In an August 27, 2026 notice, Adobe announced that version 27.0 of the covered video and audio applications will require Windows 11 24H2 or later on Windows, and macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon on Mac. The notice also says Intel-based Macs will not support version 27.0 and later. These are announced future requirements; they are not the requirements for the currently listed Premiere Pro 26.x versions. Consult Adobe’s version 27.0 compatibility notice when planning a system with that future software in mind.
