Its 30-million figure is a historical daily-use claim, not a current measure that can be directly compared with the company’s newer reach statistics.
How did Grammarly reach 30 million daily users?
The growth model connected three things: a clear initial job—helping people improve their English writing—a free way to try the product, and distribution across writing environments. Instead of requiring users to visit one editor, Grammarly brought assistance to places they already composed messages and documents. Paid offerings then provided a route to more advanced features and organizational use.

That combination helps explain the scale, but the available company figures do not identify how many users came through each channel or quantify the effect of any single feature. The mechanisms below describe the product strategy, not a measured breakdown of what caused each new signup.
What do the 30-million and newer user figures actually measure?
Grammarly’s 2021 SOC 3 report says its digital writing assistant helped “30 million people and 30,000 teams” write more clearly and effectively “every day.” That is the strongest official source for the title’s daily-use milestone. It is a company-reported figure, tied to the report’s 2021 publication, rather than an independently defined current active-user count.

| Figure | What Grammarly reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | More than 3 million registered users worldwide; licensed by more than 600 universities and corporations, according to Grammarly’s February 6, 2015 press release. | Registered users and institutional licensing—not daily users. |
| 2021 | 30 million people and 30,000 teams using Grammarly every day, according to its SOC 3 report. | The historical daily-use milestone in the title. |
| Current business page, accessed 2026 | 30 million people and more than 70,000 teams using Grammarly every day. | The page does not state a measurement date, so treat this as an undated current-page claim. |
| Current support page, accessed 2026 | More than 40 million people and 50,000 organizations worldwide. | A broader reach figure; it does not say daily active users and should not be substituted for the 2021 metric. |
The counts use different labels—registered users, daily users, teams, and organizations—and come from sources with different dates. They are not a consistent time series, so they do not establish a precise growth rate or prove that the daily audience is still exactly 30 million.
Why did the free version help adoption?
Grammarly introduced its free version in 2015, lowering the commitment required to try a tool that can be useful in frequent, low-stakes writing as well as school or work. A person could get value before making a purchase decision. As users encountered the assistant in more contexts, they could continue using it without switching their writing into a separate product.
This is the logic of a freemium model: free access broadens trial and can support word-of-mouth, while a portion of users may later pay for additional capabilities. The company’s own account identifies free use and paid plans, but does not publish conversion rates or attribute a specific share of growth to referrals.
How did Grammarly fit into people’s existing writing habits?
Its distribution footprint expanded beyond a standalone web editor. Grammarly supported a web editor, desktop apps, browser extensions, mobile keyboards, iPad, and a Microsoft Office add-in. Availability across those environments made it possible for users to encounter assistance in school assignments, workplace documents, browser-based writing, and personal messages.
This matters because an assistant is more useful when it is close to the moment of writing. Browser and Office integrations reduce the need to copy text into a separate editor; mobile keyboards extend the service to phones. Grammarly’s product descriptions list these product surfaces, but do not state the date each one launched or its individual contribution to user totals.
How did Grammarly move beyond grammar correction?
The product’s value proposition widened from correcting errors toward helping writers shape the effect of their communication. Official product descriptions include clarity, engagement, delivery, tone, fluency, translation, brand tones, style guides, and snippets. In practical terms, that broadens the question from “Is this sentence correct?” to “Does this message communicate what I intend?”
That wider scope also supports different kinds of customers. Individual users may want feedback on a sentence or tone; organizations may want shared conventions such as brand tones and style guides. These features indicate a broader product direction, but they should not be taken as proof that every capability is included in every plan.

How does Grammarly make money?
Grammarly’s paid paths include Premium or Pro for individuals, Business for teams, and Education offerings. The basic commercial structure is to let people start with free writing support and offer paid capabilities or organization controls to customers who need more. Team and education products create purchasing routes for institutions in addition to individual subscriptions.

The available material does not specify current prices, feature-by-feature plan boundaries, or the share of revenue from each offering. Those details can change, so the plan names alone are not a reliable basis for a current purchase comparison.
What changed with AI and the 2025 product expansion?
Grammarly says its machine-learning and natural-language-processing systems predate generative AI, positioning the later AI features as an evolution of an existing writing product rather than its starting point. Optional generative-AI features arrived in 2023.
In 2025, acquisitions of Coda and Superhuman Mail preceded a Superhuman rebrand. That sequence signals an ambition to broaden from writing assistance toward a wider AI productivity platform. It does not, on its own, establish what the resulting product portfolio will include or how many Grammarly users adopted the newer products.
What does the growth story establish—and what does it not?
The evidence supports a clear outline: Grammarly started with a specific writing problem, made a free version available, distributed the assistant across common writing environments, and developed paid individual, team, and education offerings. Its expanding feature set and later AI initiatives show a widening product scope.
It does not establish a current, consistently measured daily-active-user total, a channel-by-channel acquisition breakdown, or the conversion rate from free users to paid customers. The safest reading of “30 million daily users” is therefore a historical 2021 company-reported milestone, not a definitive description of today’s active audience.
