If Flip on short edge or Flip on long edge is missing, prints the back of a page upside down, or does not print at all, first check the selected printer and the app’s duplex settings. The right flip edge depends on how the finished pages should turn; it is not a universal Windows setting. If the job itself fails, print a Windows test page to determine whether the problem is specific to the app or affects the printer and driver more broadly.
What “Flip on short edge” and “Flip on long edge” do
Microsoft describes printing on both sides of paper as duplex printing. The flip option determines how the reverse side is oriented relative to the front, based on the edge you want the pages to turn around. Choose the edge that matches the finished document’s layout and binding; if you are unsure, preview the pages and print a single test sheet before running the whole job.
If both sides print but the back is upside down, the likely issue is the chosen edge, not a failure to print duplex. In Microsoft Publisher’s postcard guidance, Microsoft recommends switching to short edge when the preview shows the backs will not be upright. Check the preview in your own app, then confirm with a test sheet. Microsoft Support: duplex printing in Word; Microsoft Support: postcards in Publisher.
Fix the problem that matches your symptom
The duplex or flip-edge option is missing
- Open the app’s print screen and confirm that the intended printer is selected. Look for Print on Both Sides, Duplex, or a similar control; the exact wording and location vary by app and printer driver.
- In Word, Microsoft says the availability of Print on Both Sides indicates that duplex printing is set up for the selected printer. If it is absent, check the printer’s manual or the manufacturer’s support information to confirm whether that exact model supports automatic duplex and how its driver exposes the setting.
- If the printer supports duplex but the control is still missing, verify that the correct printer and driver are selected. A setting shown for one printer may not be available for another.
Microsoft’s instructions for Word explain the available duplex choices and manual printing: Print on both sides of paper (duplex printing) in Word. For another app or a specific printer, use that app’s help and the printer maker’s model-specific documentation.

The back side prints upside down
- In the print preview, inspect the front and back orientation of a page.
- Change the flip edge from long to short, or short to long, and check the preview again. The appropriate choice depends on the layout and how you intend to turn the page.
- Print one sheet and check both sides before printing the complete document.
Publisher’s postcard instructions specifically advise selecting short-edge flipping when the preview shows the backs are not upright; this is guidance for that workflow, not a rule that short edge is correct for every document. Microsoft Support: create and print postcards in Publisher.
The printer prints only one side
Check whether the selected printer supports automatic duplex. If it does not, Word may offer a manual-duplex option: it prints one side and prompts you to reinsert the stack so it can print the other. Follow the prompt and the printer maker’s feed instructions. Paper paths differ by model, so do not assume a universal direction for turning or reinserting pages; test with one sheet first. Microsoft Support: duplex printing in Word.

The print job fails or stays in the queue
Separate an app-specific problem from a Windows, printer, or driver problem by printing a Windows test page. In Windows, open the printer’s properties and select Print Test Page; the exact route to printer properties can vary by Windows version and printer setup.
- If the test page prints: Windows can communicate with the printer. Focus next on the app’s printer selection and duplex settings, the document, paper size, and page orientation.
- If the test page does not print: troubleshoot the printer connection or driver before changing document-level flip settings.

When Windows test printing fails: troubleshoot in stages
For general Windows printing failures, Microsoft recommends working through connection and software checks rather than assuming the flip-edge setting caused the problem. On Windows 11, start with the Get Help printer troubleshooter. For other versions, use the relevant Windows or printer-maker instructions.
- Check power and connection. Confirm the printer is on and connected. For a wired printer, check the cable; for a wireless printer, confirm its network connection.
- Restart the printer and PC. Power-cycle the printer, then restart the computer and try the test page again.
- Remove and reinstall the printer. Use Windows printer settings to remove the device, then add it again.
- Update the printer driver. Check Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support page for the driver for your exact model.
- Consider resetting the print spooler only if earlier steps fail. Microsoft includes spooler troubleshooting among its general remedies. Follow its current instructions carefully; deleting spooler files is an advanced step, not a routine duplex fix.
Microsoft’s general guidance is Fix printer connection and printing problems in Windows. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so users still running it should account for that support status when seeking current troubleshooting and security updates.
