Then compare the exact 2TB model’s rated performance, cooling solution, endurance, and warranty. Advertised peak sequential speeds are manufacturer ratings—not a guarantee of faster games, shorter boot times, or better performance in every system.
1. Confirm your system supports the drive
M.2 describes a drive’s shape and connector, not necessarily its storage protocol. Check the documentation for your specific computer, motherboard, or console to confirm that the slot supports NVMe—not just M.2 SATA—and that it accepts the drive’s length. Also check which PCIe generation and lane configuration the slot supports. A PCIe 4.0 drive may work in a compatible slower-generation slot, but it cannot deliver the faster link’s throughput there.
- Interface: Confirm M.2 NVMe support and the required keying. For example, M.2 SATA is not supported as PS5 expansion storage.
- Length: Match the drive’s size, such as 2280, to the sizes supported by the host.
- Connection: Check PCIe generation and lane support in the host manual; M.2 slots are not all equivalent.
- Clearance: Allow for the complete drive assembly, including any heatsink, inside the case or bay.
For PS5 specifically, Sony’s M.2 expansion guidance calls for a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M), with 250 GB–8 TB capacity and one of these lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110. Sony lists a maximum width of 25 mm and maximum overall thickness of 11.25 mm, with separate limits for the portions above and below the drive’s circuit board. These are PS5-specific fit requirements, not general PC or laptop rules.
2. Check cooling and heatsink fit
Some systems need a heatsink or another cooling solution for an M.2 drive. Check whether the drive includes one and whether the entire assembly fits the host. A “2280” label tells you the drive’s length and width class; it does not establish that a particular heatsink will fit an enclosure or console bay.

For PS5 expansion, Sony says the SSD needs effective heat dissipation, using a cooling structure such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. The cooling structure can be built in or attached separately, but it must fit within the console’s dimensional limits. Sony supports single- and double-sided drives and notes that single-sided cooling structures are easier to fit. If the assembled dimensions are unclear, check with the drive maker before buying.
Dimensions and handling can be model-specific. Seagate lists its 2TB Game Drive M.2 SSD with heatsink at 80.15 mm long, 24.2 mm wide, and 10.39 mm high, and warns that removing its preinstalled heatsink can damage the SSD. Do not assume those dimensions or instructions apply to other drives.

3. Compare the exact 2TB model’s performance
Use specifications for the precise 2TB SKU rather than a different capacity or a similarly named variant. Manufacturers commonly advertise maximum sequential read and write speeds. Those ratings are useful for comparing published specifications, but they do not predict every workload or system’s results.
| 2TB model | Manufacturer-rated sequential read | Manufacturer-rated sequential write | Listed endurance | Listed warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WD_BLACK SN850P | Up to 7,300 MB/s | Up to 6,600 MB/s | 1,200 TBW | Five-year limited warranty |
| Seagate Game Drive M.2 SSD with Heatsink | Up to 7,300 MB/s | Up to 6,900 MB/s; Seagate’s rating is based on its stated test setup | 2,550 TBW | Five-year limited warranty |
The model-specific figures come from SanDisk’s WD_BLACK SN850P 2TB specifications and Seagate’s Game Drive datasheet. Seagate says measured performance can vary with firmware, system hardware, and configuration. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test.

Sequential ratings alone do not establish performance in games, boot times, random workloads, sustained large transfers, or a thermally constrained laptop. For PS5, Sony recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read for an expansion drive, but warns that even an M.2 SSD exceeding that figure may not deliver the same performance as the console’s internal SSD in every game.
4. Compare endurance and warranty terms
TBW means terabytes written: a manufacturer’s rated write-endurance figure used in its product specifications and warranty framework. Compare the number for the exact capacity and model, but do not treat it as a predicted lifespan or a comparative failure-rate measurement. In the examples above, SanDisk lists 1,200 TBW for the WD_BLACK SN850P 2TB, while Seagate lists 2,550 TBW for its Game Drive with heatsink 2TB.

Read the warranty terms for the specific model and the region where you are buying it. Coverage may end at a time limit, a write limit, or whichever comes first. For example, MSI’s SPATIUM M482 warranty statement says coverage lasts up to five years or until the specified TBW is met, whichever happens first. That example does not establish the terms for other SSDs; check the manufacturer’s full terms for your chosen SKU.
