Uber Eats is rolling out AI tools for restaurant content: the tools can draft menu descriptions, summarize customer reviews, and detect and enhance low-quality food images. The company also announced live order chat for merchants to clarify requests such as substitutions and dietary preferences. The image tools may make food look more polished, but Uber’s customer-photo rules require submitted photos to be authentic and prohibit AI-generated or heavily edited images.
What AI is Uber Eats adding to restaurant menus?
Uber’s August 26, 2026 announcement describes three AI-supported content tasks for merchants: generating menu-item descriptions, summarizing customer reviews, and detecting and enhancing low-quality food images. AI-generated descriptions and review summaries
Uber says its tools can produce menu descriptions and summarize reviews, helping merchants present item details and customer feedback. Uber’s legal disclosure says some restaurant item descriptions may be built with Meta Llama 3. Merchants using Menu Maker can choose to auto-accept AI-generated descriptions, according to Uber’s Menu Details help page. That means automation is a merchant workflow option, not proof that all descriptions are generated or accepted without merchant control. AI-enhanced restaurant food images
Uber says its system can identify low-quality food images and improve lighting, resolution, framing, and plating. A July 31, 2025 report on the feature described the possibility of moving food from a takeout container onto a plate. That describes an announced capability, not evidence that every listing image is altered in this way. The resulting presentation may therefore look more polished than the dish as delivered. Are Uber Eats food photos AI-generated?
Not necessarily. Uber’s announcement says AI can detect and enhance some low-quality merchant food images, but does not say that every restaurant photo is AI-generated or altered, nor does it confirm that the consumer app labels each AI-enhanced image. Enhancement can change how a dish is presented, so customers should not assume every listing image is a literal view of the food in its delivery packaging.

Can restaurants use AI descriptions and upload menu photos?
Yes. Uber’s Menu Maker help page describes an option to auto-accept AI-generated descriptions. For merchant-submitted photos, Uber’s rules require the image to accurately represent one menu item and be centered. The recommended aspect ratio is 5:4 to 6:4; accepted formats are JPG, PNG, or GIF; file size may be up to 10 MB, subject to stated pixel limits. Can customers upload food photos and earn money?
Uber’s 2026 announcement says selected U.S. customer photo submissions can earn $3 in Uber Cash. It names the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom as incentive markets, but does not establish that every submission qualifies or that the same reward applies in all four markets. Customer photos must be authentic
Uber’s User-Submitted Photo Guidelines state: “Don’t submit AI-generated or heavily edited images — only authentic photos will be considered.” The guidelines recommend natural light, a top-down or 45-degree angle, and taking the photo soon after delivery. This customer-photo rule is distinct from Uber’s AI enhancement of merchant imagery: the company permits enhancement in its merchant content workflow while requiring authenticity for customer submissions. What else is changing for merchants?
Uber also announced live order chat, allowing merchants to clarify replacements, special requests, and dietary or allergy preferences with customers. This is an order-communication feature rather than a menu-content tool; the announcement does not establish that it replaces customers’ need to communicate important allergy requirements clearly. How widely are the AI tools available, and how well do they work?
Uber’s legal disclosure cautions that its generative-AI search and image features may not be available in every country or language. The 2026 announcement describes a company operating across more than 11,000 cities and six continents, but that footprint does not mean every new feature is available across all those locations. Uber reports that 78% of merchants who use its AI tools said they were effective. This is Uber’s own reported figure, not an independent study or a controlled outcome test, so it should be read as a merchant-reported measure rather than proof of a particular improvement in sales, accuracy, or customer satisfaction.
