It can stream media while it downloads and offers advanced options for plugins, remote control, network privacy and seeding. Those features make it capable, but they do not make file sharing anonymous or remove the need to use torrents lawfully.
What is BiglyBT?
BiglyBT is a BitTorrent application maintained by BiglySoftware and its community. The project traces its lineage to Azureus and Vuze and says it has been actively developed since 2003. The official site describes it as feature-filled, open-source and ad-free, and says its installer contains no third-party offers. You can get it from the official BiglyBT site.
BiglyBT is free to use. Its source code is available through the project repository. The project’s site lists version 4.1 as released on May 19, 2026; release information can change, so check the official site for the current version.
How does BiglyBT work?
A torrent file or magnet link gives the client information for locating a torrent’s metadata and peers. BiglyBT downloads the file in pieces from participating peers and can upload pieces you have received to others. Uploading after or during a download is called seeding; it is a normal part of BitTorrent’s peer-to-peer system.

To begin, open a torrent file or add a magnet link in BiglyBT, then choose where to save the content and start the task. The client supports playing some media while it is still downloading. Availability and playback quality depend on the file, the order in which pieces arrive and the speed of the swarm; streaming is not a guarantee that any particular file will play smoothly.
What features set BiglyBT apart?
Plugins and automation
Optional plugins add functions beyond the core client. Browse them in Tools > Plugins > Get Plugins. The project lists ScaneRSS, which reads RSS feeds and applies filters to automate torrent downloads, and a VPN-monitoring plugin associated with Perfect Privacy. Some plugins use separate repositories, and compatibility or provider support may change; check the plugin’s current documentation before relying on it.

Streaming, WebTorrent and swarm tools
BiglyBT supports in-progress media playback and WebTorrent, alongside tools such as swarm merging. Swarm merging can bring together sources for the same content when supported, while network-specific controls let experienced users manage which networks the client uses. These are specialized capabilities rather than prerequisites for ordinary torrent downloads.
Remote access and seeding controls
Advanced users can configure dashboards, remote control, queue behavior and detailed seeding rules. The range of options is useful when managing many transfers or automating workflows, but it also means the interface and setup can feel more involved than a minimal torrent client.

Is BiglyBT safe or anonymous?
BiglyBT is open-source software distributed by its project, but that alone does not make every torrent safe. Torrent content can contain malware or infringe copyright, and participating peers may see your public IP address unless network routing or privacy settings change what they can observe. Download only content you have the right to access, and use reputable sources.
BiglyBT supports I2P-related anonymous downloading features, but the project explicitly warns: “BiglyBT doesn’t make any guarantees regarding anonymous downloading.” Privacy features are not a promise of anonymity, and using them does not make unlawful sharing legal. See the project’s anonymous download options documentation for its guidance.

How to use BiglyBT with a VPN
A VPN generally routes BiglyBT’s network traffic through the operating system’s VPN connection. Configuration matters: if the VPN disconnects or the client uses the wrong network interface, peers could connect over your ordinary internet connection instead. BiglyBT’s VPN and NAT guidance discusses incoming connections and interface binding.
- Connect the VPN first. Confirm that it is active before starting transfers. VPN providers differ in whether they allow incoming connections or port forwarding.
- Adjust incoming peer sources if needed. If your VPN provider does not support incoming connections, the BiglyBT guide recommends disabling the Incoming Connection peer source. This can reduce connectivity, since fewer peers may be able to initiate a connection to you.
- Bind BiglyBT to the VPN interface. Use the client’s network-interface binding controls to select the VPN interface, where available. Binding helps prevent torrent traffic from falling back to the public interface if the VPN disconnects; it is a configuration safeguard, not a guarantee of anonymity.
- Check the provider’s current behavior. Confirm its torrent policy and whether it supports incoming connections or port forwarding. Those details vary by provider and may change.
How does BiglyBT compare with other torrent clients?
BiglyBT’s official materials document a wide set of features, but they do not establish a current, controlled performance comparison with qBittorrent, Transmission, Deluge or other clients. Choose based on the capabilities and setup you need rather than assuming one client is universally faster or lighter.

Who should use BiglyBT?
BiglyBT is a good fit if you want a free, ad-free client with substantial customization, plugins, streaming, remote management or detailed network controls. If you only need to open occasional torrent files and prefer a simpler interface, its depth may be more than you need. In either case, use trustworthy sources, configure networking deliberately and respect copyright law.
