A third-party guide reports that some item listings may show a “Hide from friends” option, but Meta’s general privacy guidance does not establish that Marketplace listings are private or invisible to friends. Check the controls shown in your own listing flow before publishing; don’t treat the option as a guarantee that nobody you know can find the listing.
What “Hide from friends” can—and cannot—mean
A recently crawled LotLift guide reports a “Hide from friends” toggle for some Marketplace item listings. It also says a listing may remain public when the toggle is used. This is secondary-source reporting, not a behavior confirmed by the Meta Help Center pages reviewed here, so availability and effect may vary by listing category, account, app, or current interface.
If the option appears, consider it a limited visibility control—not a way to make the listing private or prevent every acquaintance from finding it. Inspect the wording and audience options on the listing itself rather than assuming a setting shown elsewhere on Facebook applies.
Categories the guide says may not have the option
The LotLift guide reports that the control is unavailable for apartments, homes, and vehicles. Meta’s surfaced guidance does not independently confirm those category limits, so check the current listing form for the category you are posting in.

How to check before you publish
- Open Facebook Marketplace and start creating the listing in the category you intend to use.
- Review the audience and visibility controls presented in that listing flow. If “Hide from friends” appears, read its accompanying description and decide whether its stated effect meets your needs.
- If the control is absent, do not assume a general Facebook privacy setting will hide the Marketplace listing. Decide whether you are comfortable publishing with the visibility the listing flow describes.
- Check Meta’s current Help Center if you need current policy details; the interface and availability can change.
Why other Facebook privacy settings are not substitutes
Meta groups general privacy controls under Settings & privacy and Audience and visibility. It says, “You can view and adjust your privacy settings at any time from the Audience and visibility section of Settings & privacy.” The available settings can vary by profile type. These controls cover areas such as profile details, posts, stories, reels, profile and tagging, and blocking, but Meta’s general privacy page does not establish that changing them changes who can see a Marketplace listing. See Meta’s overview of privacy settings.
| Control | What it applies to | What it does not establish about a Marketplace listing |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace listing control | The listing, if an audience option is shown in its creation flow. | The reported “Hide from friends” option is not confirmed as universally available or as making a listing private. Check the live listing flow. LotLift guide |
| General privacy settings | Facebook settings in areas such as posts, profile details, and tagging. | Meta’s overview does not say these settings determine Marketplace listing visibility. Meta Help Center |
| Friends-list audience | Who can see the friends list on your profile. | It is not a Marketplace listing control. A friend’s own settings may still show the friendship, and mutual friends may be visible. Meta Help Center |
| Privacy Checkup | A guide through privacy and sharing settings. | Meta’s Safety Center does not state that Privacy Checkup changes Marketplace listing visibility. Meta Safety Center |
Privacy Checkup, friends lists, and ratings
Meta describes Privacy Checkup as a way to review privacy and sharing settings. It is useful for reviewing those settings, but the Safety Center page does not say it hides Marketplace listings from friends.

Likewise, limiting who sees the friends list on your profile does not hide a Marketplace post. Meta notes that a friend’s own settings can still show the friendship and that mutual friends may be visible. That setting concerns the friends list, not your listing’s audience; see Meta’s friends-list guidance.
Marketplace ratings are another separate feature: Meta says buyer ratings are private, while seller ratings become public once the seller has five or more ratings. Those rating rules do not describe who can see a listing. Details are in Meta’s Marketplace ratings guidance.

Practical privacy checks before listing
- Use the audience or visibility controls attached to the listing, not assumptions based on profile, post, or friends-list settings.
- If you would not want friends or acquaintances to find the listing, consider whether to publish it at all; the reported hide option is not a promise of secrecy.
- Recheck the controls each time you create a listing, especially if you change categories or use a different app or account.
