If OpenJ9 appeared when you installed Java or opened an application, you have encountered a different Java virtual machine—not a new Java language. Most Java applications should run on an OpenJDK distribution containing OpenJ9 without source changes. Whether to keep using it comes down to the application’s Java requirements, the JDK distributor’s support, and how the runtime performs for your workload.

What is OpenJ9 on Windows?

Eclipse OpenJ9 is a Java virtual machine (JVM): the software that runs Java bytecode. It is an alternative to HotSpot, the JVM used in many other Java distributions. OpenJ9 is not a replacement programming language, and seeing it does not mean your Java source code has changed.

The OpenJ9 project describes the VM as a high-performance, scalable implementation that complies with the Java Virtual Machine Specification. Its documentation says most Java applications should run on an OpenJDK containing OpenJ9 without changes to the underlying system. That is a general compatibility expectation, not a guarantee for every application; software that requires a particular vendor, VM option, native library, or Java version may need extra checks. Eclipse OpenJ9: Getting started

Why did OpenJ9 show up when I installed Java?

Java distributions bundle a JVM, and not every distribution uses HotSpot. A JDK or application bundle can therefore include OpenJ9 even if you did not select it separately. Eclipse OpenJ9 does not distribute JDK binaries itself: you obtain a compatible distribution, such as IBM Semeru, or build one. Check the distributor and version shown by the installer or application, rather than assuming that “Java” identifies one specific VM. OpenJ9 build guidance

Which Java versions does OpenJ9 support on Windows?

The official supported-platform matrix lists x64 binaries for OpenJDK 8, 11, 17, 21, and 25+ on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2016, 2019, and 2022. This describes the matrix’s listed operating systems and builds; it does not mean every application supports every Java release. Check both the application’s required Java major version and the distributor’s current availability and support terms before installing. OpenJ9 supported platforms

How to install and verify OpenJ9 on Windows

  1. Identify the application’s Java requirement. Find its supported Java major version and whether it specifies a vendor or runtime. Do not choose a Java version solely because it is the newest.
  2. Choose a distributor and build. Obtain an OpenJ9-based OpenJDK distribution, such as IBM Semeru, or build one. Select a Windows x64 build that matches the application’s Java requirement and the supported-platform matrix.
  3. Install or unpack the runtime. Follow the chosen distributor’s instructions. If the application expects environment variables, set JAVA_HOME to the runtime directory and add its bin directory to PATH as appropriate for that distribution.
  4. Check which Java Windows will run. Open Command Prompt and run java -version. Confirm that the output identifies the expected Java release and OpenJ9 runtime. If it shows another VM or version, check the order of Java entries in PATH, the value of JAVA_HOME, and whether the application uses its own bundled runtime.
  5. Try the application with defaults first. OpenJ9 documentation says its default options are intended to provide a suitable runtime for typical workloads. If the application works, there may be no reason to tune it.

The OpenJ9 build guidance recommends java -version as a simple way to verify the active runtime. OpenJ9 build guidance

Is OpenJ9 faster or lighter than HotSpot?

There is no universal winner. Compare the runtimes using the application and environment that matter to you: startup time, steady-state throughput, resident memory, garbage-collection pauses, warm-up behavior, diagnostic tools, and the JDK distributor’s update and support policy. Results can change with workload, Java version, configuration, and tuning; a general design goal is not a promise about your machine.

One historical result has a narrow scope. In a 2018 Windows bake-off, the Eclipse OpenJ9 project reported that OpenJ9 used “about 42% less memory than HotSpot” when launching Eclipse IDE. That is evidence for that tested launch scenario, not a universal measurement for Windows applications or an assurance of lower memory use in your own workload. When should you tune OpenJ9?

Start by confirming that the application works and measuring its behavior under a representative workload. If there is a specific problem—such as excessive memory use, slow startup, or disruptive pauses—investigate the matching setting rather than applying a collection of flags copied from another application.

  • Garbage-collection policy: Consider it when measurements point to a throughput or pause-time issue; policies involve trade-offs, so validate changes under the same workload.
  • Heap limits: Adjust them only when the application’s memory needs and available system memory are understood. A larger heap is not automatically faster or more efficient.
  • Class-data sharing: OpenJ9 can use a class cache; startup time may improve after the cache has been created. Measure cold and subsequent starts separately so the result is clear.
  • Workload-specific options: Keep a record of each change and compare it with the default configuration. The useful setting depends on what the application does, not just on the JVM name.

How to decide whether to keep it

If the application starts, its required Java version is supported, and its vendor supports the distribution you installed, OpenJ9 is a reasonable runtime to try. If a problem appears, first verify the active VM and Java version, then check the application vendor’s requirements and the JDK distributor’s support policy. Switch runtimes only when there is a concrete compatibility or performance reason—not simply because OpenJ9 is unfamiliar.
