The Nikon COOLPIX S1 is a discontinued 2005 compact digital camera with 5.1 effective megapixels, a 3x optical zoom and a 2.5-inch LCD. It stores photos on SD cards, runs on an EN-EL8 battery and was supplied with a COOL-STATION MV11 dock in Nikon’s listed accessory package. Nikon’s 2005 specification sheet describes a slim compact built around a 1/2.5-inch CCD sensor. The sensor has 5.36 million total pixels, of which 5.1 million are effective. Its NIKKOR ED lens provides 3x optical zoom, covering a 35–105mm equivalent focal range.

These are period specifications, not a promise that a used example will perform the same today. Battery age, wear and the condition of the lens and screen matter when assessing a second-hand camera.
Battery, dock and SD-card compatibility
Battery: EN-EL8
Nikon lists the rechargeable EN-EL8 as the camera’s battery. The approximately 200-image rating is Nikon’s estimate under its stated CIPA conditions, not a guaranteed count for an aged battery or every shooting pattern. For a used camera, check whether the battery holds charge and whether a compatible charger or power accessory is included. Nikon’s COOLPIX S1 specification sheet is the reference for the listed battery.

Dock: COOL-STATION MV11
Nikon listed the COOL-STATION MV11 among the supplied accessories, along with an EH-63 AC adapter, cables, strap and PictureProject software. Box contents could vary by country or area, so a missing dock does not by itself establish that a listing is incomplete for every market. If you want the dock, confirm that the seller includes an MV11 and that it works with the camera. Nikon’s accessory listing identifies the model.
Storage: SD cards
The camera accepts SD (Secure Digital) cards and also has approximately 12MB of internal memory. Nikon’s manual is the source for the camera’s storage instructions; consult it when checking card use and camera operation: COOLPIX S1 manual (PDF). The available information here establishes SD support but does not specify a maximum card capacity, so do not assume that every modern SD card will work. Verify compatibility for the particular card before buying.

What HotHardware’s 2005 page says
HotHardware posted the title-matching page on July 3, 2005. Alongside the heading “C3 Expo 2005 Coverage @ XYZ Computing,” it reproduced a short camera item attributed to Bytesector. That item called the S1 “slim, tiny, lightweight, and pocket-sized” and highlighted its 5.1-megapixel CCD, 2.5-inch LCD, 3x optical zoom, mini docking station and PictBridge support. What was C3 Expo 2005?
C3 Expo ran June 28–30, 2005, at New York’s Javits Center. A Japanese-language Weekly BCN trade report said the event drew more than 30,000 visitors; that attendance figure is a translated secondary-source report, not an official attendance statement established here. What to check when buying a used COOLPIX S1
The S1 is a discontinued model, so shoppers should expect second-hand or collectible listings rather than current retail stock. A listing’s condition and included accessories are more consequential than its original specifications.
- Battery: Ask whether the EN-EL8 is included and test whether it charges and powers the camera.
- Lens and zoom: Confirm the lens extends and retracts smoothly and that the full 3x zoom range operates.
- LCD: Check for cracks, dead areas or display problems.
- SD-card access: Test that the camera recognizes a card and can save and review images.
- Dock and accessories: Confirm whether the COOL-STATION MV11, EH-63 adapter, cables or other items shown are actually included; accessory packages varied by market.
