FreeBSD’s Laptop Integration Testing project is now open to community reports. You can run its tool on an installed FreeBSD system or a live environment, review the anonymized hardware results, then submit them for the public compatibility matrix. That matrix can help answer whether a laptop’s graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, USB and other functions work together—but its scores are community indicators, not guarantees for every configuration.

What FreeBSD’s laptop testing project does

On April 6, 2026, the FreeBSD Foundation announced that it was opening the Laptop Integration Testing project to the community after trial runs on committed target systems. The project tests a complete laptop experience rather than checking only whether an individual driver exists. The Foundation says the broader Laptop Support and Usability Project had already delivered work in graphics, Wi-Fi drivers and installer improvements, including out-of-the-box KDE Plasma support. Read the Foundation announcement.

The aim is to answer practical questions: “Which laptop should I buy if I want to use FreeBSD on it?”, “Does my laptop work with FreeBSD?”, and “Do I need extra configuration for FreeBSD Wi-Fi or graphics?” The project also gives owners a way to share what worked and what needed setup.

How to test FreeBSD on your laptop

The documented workflow uses an unprivileged user and can run either on an installed FreeBSD system or in a live environment such as mfsBSD. The tool probes the system and records which features work or do not work. Follow the repository’s current instructions, since its workflow may be updated:

WAVLINK 5Gbps USB C to Ethernet Adapter, Ethernet Adapter for Laptop
  • USB C to 5Gbps Etherent - RJ45 Ethernet ports support ultra-fast network speeds of up to 5000Mbps (5Gbps), which is 5 times the performance of traditional Gigabit Ethernet adapters, and are backward compatible with 10/100/1000/2500Mbps. Enjoy faster file transfers, smoother video conferences, and seamless media streaming.
  • Standard - The Ethernet ports comply with the IEEE 802.3bz (2500/5000Mbps) standard, while the Type-C follows the USB Spec 3.2 standard. This device guarantees optimal performance for various network demands. Please connect to a USB 3.2 or higher port to avoid speed limitations that may arise with USB 2.0/3.0.
  • Necessary for 5G Speed - 1.Broadband speed must exceed 5G; 2. Modem/Router should support 5G network output; 3. Ethernet cable needs to be of CAT6A or higher grade; 4. Connect to a laptop port that is USB 3.2 or higher. Please download and install the driver software!
  • Lightweight Design - This device features a high-quality aluminum alloy casing and internal heat dissipation design, ensuring durability and stability for long-term use. Emphasizing convenience, its compact and lightweight design optimizes space utilization in home, office, or mobile settings.
  • Compatibility - Works with Windows 10, Mac OS 10.13.6 to 11.x, iPadOS, Linux Kernel 5.x and above, up-to-date Chrome OS. Driver download and install may be required on older OS and Kernel versions. NOT compatible with Nintendo Switch, Most Android devices, TiVo Series 2, Wii, or other non-PC/Mac platforms, Not recommended for use with FreeBSD or pfSense.
  1. Install the required packages: pkg install python hw-probe.

  2. Clone the freebsd-laptop-testing repository.

  3. From the cloned repository, run make as the unprivileged user and allow the tool to probe the laptop.

  4. Review the generated results directory. The workflow describes the results as fully anonymized; you may add a comments.md file with useful context about features or setup.

  5. Submit the directory in a pull request and answer the User Stories questionnaire. Maintainers process reports and publish them to the compatibility matrix. The announcement says no personally identifiable information will be published.

Adding a report helps document a particular tested system; it does not certify every machine sold under the same model name. If your laptop has an unusual configuration, firmware revision or attached peripheral, include relevant details in the comments where possible.

How to read the compatibility scores

The matrix’s score combines detected components with deductions for degraded functionality. The FreeBSD compatibility site describes penalties ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 points, based on severity and importance; Wi-Fi and graphics receive greater weight. User comments and the amount of setup involved also contribute. A score is therefore a practical summary of reported compatibility, not a universal benchmark or a promise that all features will work without configuration. View the live compatibility matrix.

Use the component details and comments alongside the total. For example, the displayed Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 7040 Series) row scores Phoenix1 graphics 2/2, Wi-Fi 6E AX210/AX1675 networking 2/2, Radeon/Ryzen audio 2/2, and USB4/Thunderbolt controllers 2/2, for an overall 8/10. By contrast, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (AMD) is shown at 6.5/10 with networking 0.5/2, while the Microsoft Surface Book with Performance Base is shown at 6/10 with wireless 0/2. The trade-off can matter more than the headline score if wireless is essential to your use.

The live matrix also displays 8/10 for these models: Dell Inspiron 5570, Dell Latitude E7440, Lenovo ThinkPad T490, HP EliteBook 845 G7 Notebook PC, Dell XPS 17 9700, Dell XPS 9315, ASUS TUF Gaming F15 (2023), HP Laptop 15-ef2xxx, and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8. These are displayed community scores, not a controlled comparison; entries can change as reports and comments are merged.

What to compare before choosing a laptop

Check the row for the exact model and pay attention to the components and setup details that affect your workload, not just the score:

  • Graphics: Look for the reported GPU and whether graphics functionality is complete or degraded.

  • Wi-Fi and networking: Check the specific wireless chipset and networking score; a weak or missing result can make a nominally high-scoring laptop a poor fit.

  • Audio and Bluetooth: Confirm the reported behavior for built-in audio and wireless peripherals.

  • USB and Thunderbolt: Check controller support if you rely on docks, external displays or fast storage.

  • Power management: Look for reported sleep, resume and other power-related behavior.

  • Setup and comments: Read what configuration was needed and whether owners describe limitations that matter to you.

A model name alone may not identify the precise hardware inside a retail unit. Components, firmware revisions and peripherals can differ, so treat a matrix entry as evidence about the reported system rather than a guarantee for every variant.

How the project is organized

The Q1 2026 FreeBSD status report says the team built a Python application on hw-probe, a static-site generator, GitHub Actions automation, a pull-request template and an automatic scoring workflow. It reports testing the Framework Laptop 13 (AMD 7040 Series) and Lenovo Yoga 11e against integration guidelines on FreeBSD 16-CURRENT, with iteration continuing after launch. Read the Q1 2026 status report.

The project repository names Siva Mahadevan as Testing Manager and Alice Sowerby as Program Manager, and describes goals that include comprehensive validation, a definitive public record, volunteer participation and bug reporting with developers. See the project repository.

Framework Computer continues to support FreeBSD by providing engineering samples and development hardware, according to the FreeBSD Q2 2026 Framework report. The report also covers Framework-related work on system tools, Panther Lake hardware, graphics DRM drivers, power management and suspend/resume fixes. Framework laptops are among the project’s target platforms; this relationship does not turn an individual compatibility score into a guarantee. Read the Q2 2026 Framework report.
