The LoRa Alliance’s 2025 End of Year Report, released February 17, 2026, says LoRaWAN reached 125 million deployed devices worldwide and grew at a 25% compound annual rate. It describes the technology as infrastructure for large-scale Internet of Things deployments, with utilities leading adoption and activity also spanning buildings, cities, industry, agriculture and critical infrastructure.

What does the LoRa Alliance’s 2025 report say?

The Alliance presents 2025 as an inflection point: LoRaWAN is moving from individual IoT projects toward operational infrastructure for “Massive IoT”—large numbers of connected devices used across real-world services and industries. The report positions it alongside cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, not as a universal replacement for them.

In its February 17, 2026 announcement, the Alliance reported 125 million deployed LoRaWAN devices globally and a 25% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The announcement also counted 360 Alliance members, including 57 that joined during 2025, and more than 625 certified devices.

How fast is LoRaWAN growing?

The 25% CAGR reported for the 2025 year-end picture signals sustained growth, but it is an Alliance-reported industry figure, not an independent measurement or a forecast for every market. A later update from the Alliance, dated September 2026, reported more than 150 million connected devices, more than 695 certified devices and close to 1,000 marketplace products. Those later figures indicate continued expansion beyond the 2025 snapshot; “deployed” and “connected” are the terms used in the respective announcements.

Where is LoRaWAN being used?

Utilities are the leading deployment area, particularly smart water. The Alliance also identifies several substantial growth areas:

  • Smart buildings and facilities: connected sensors can support building monitoring and operational services.
  • Cities: municipal deployments can connect distributed infrastructure and services.
  • Industry: LoRaWAN supports connected-device use cases in industrial settings.
  • Agriculture: farms are among the sectors adopting networked sensors and other IoT devices.
  • Critical infrastructure: the report identifies this as another important area of deployment and growth.

The report identifies these sectors but does not provide a comparable device count or adoption rate for each one in the figures summarized here.

What is changing in the LoRaWAN ecosystem?

The Alliance points to work intended to make larger and more varied deployments practical. Its 2025 report highlights expanded interoperability, support for regional spectrum conditions, improved data rates and development of non-terrestrial-network (NTN) connectivity, including satellite links. These are areas of continued evolution; the report’s headline deployment figures do not, by themselves, establish performance or availability for every region or use case.

The wider ecosystem is also growing: the 2025 announcement counted 360 Alliance members and more than 625 certified devices. The September 2026 update raised those figures to more than 695 certified devices and close to 1,000 marketplace products. Certification and marketplace listings indicate an expanding product ecosystem, but they do not guarantee that every device is suitable for a particular deployment.

Is LoRaWAN ready for large-scale IoT?

The reported global device count, growth rate and spread of deployment sectors support the view that LoRaWAN is already being used at substantial scale. Whether it is the right technology for a specific project depends on requirements that a headline growth figure cannot answer.

  • Coverage model: assess the coverage available where devices will operate and whether the project needs its own gateways or can use an existing network.
  • Power and traffic needs: compare battery-life goals and the amount and frequency of data a device must send against other connectivity options.
  • Spectrum and geography: confirm that devices and gateways support the regional spectrum requirements for the deployment location.
  • Interoperability: verify device certification and compatibility across the intended network components rather than assuming products will work together.
  • Workload fit: evaluate the actual utility, building, city, industrial, agricultural or tracking requirements before choosing a network technology.

The Alliance describes LoRaWAN as complementary to cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The appropriate choice depends on the workload, coverage model, device constraints and local conditions—not on a claim that one standard replaces the others.

What hardware is needed for a LoRaWAN network?

A basic deployment uses LoRaWAN end devices, such as sensors or meters, to collect or transmit information, and gateways to relay device traffic into the network. The project also needs the network and application components that manage connectivity and use the data. The right configuration depends on whether an existing network is available, where devices will be installed and which regional frequency band applies.
