Before running fiber through your house, confirm your internet provider’s ONT location, connector and cable requirements, and whether it will supply or install the indoor fiber. Then plan the route, choose cable rated for the space, prepare and support the pathway, pull without twisting or exceeding the cable’s bend and tension limits, and finish with compatible termination and testing.

Confirm the ONT and provider requirements first

The optical network terminal (ONT) is the device that converts the incoming optical connection for your home network. Its location, fiber type, connector, and installation rules depend on your provider. Ask whether the provider supplies or installs the internal fiber, whether you may move the ONT, and whether relocating it affects support. Confirm the connector and fiber specifications before ordering a pre-terminated cable or settling on an equipment location.

Provider instructions can cover more than the fiber itself: Openreach, for example, publishes separate guidance on ONT location, power, internal fiber, data points, and router preparation. Follow the instructions for your service and country rather than assuming that another provider’s arrangement applies.

Choose where the cable will run

Plan the complete route from the fiber entry point to the ONT or termination point before buying cable. Check the attic, crawlspace, basement, wall cavities, and any risers or floor crossings the route would use. Measure the path and allow extra length for terminations and service loops. Favor accessible routes with gentle turns and pull points; where practical, make the run in one pull.

  • Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
  • High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
  • 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
  • No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty

Decide whether the ONT itself needs to move. If the provider permits it, moving the ONT can put both the optical termination and network equipment nearer the desired location. Alternatively, leave the ONT near the entry point and extend the network side with Ethernet. The second approach avoids a longer indoor optical run, but the provider may require the ONT to stay in its installed location. Confirm that constraint before planning either option.

Select indoor fiber and a pathway

Match the cable to the actual route and equipment. Before purchase, check its indoor jacket rating for the space, fiber mode, connector type, length, maximum pulling tension, and bend-radius specification. The International Telecommunication Union’s ITU-T Recommendation L.103 (08/2024) covers characteristics, construction, and test methods for indoor optical-fibre cables and is listed as in force.

Amazon Basics Toslink Digital Optical Audio Fiber Optic Cable, Multi-Channel, for Sound Bar, Audio System, Home Theatre, Game Console, Blu-Ray Player, Gold-Plated Connectors, 6 Foot, Black
  • Please REMOVE the end protective caps before using the cable.
  • IN THE BOX: 6-foot digital optical audio Toslink cable.
  • CLEAR AUDIO: Multi-channel, fiber-optic digital audio output; corrosion resistant gold-plated connectors and buffer tubing for optimal signal transfer.
  • DURABLE: Lightweight, flexible cable with a rugged PVC exterior and removable rubber tips that protect the cable when not plugged in; remove before using.
  • CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.

For a route that needs mechanical protection or future serviceability, install empty conduit or innerduct. Do not put the fiber into a conduit or duct that already contains another cable. A protected pathway is useful only if it has enough room for the fiber’s bend limits and a route that can be serviced without crushing or snagging it.

Prepare supports and penetrations

Install the raceway, tray, hangers, conduit, or innerduct before pulling the cable. Supports should have broad contact surfaces and no sharp edges. Do not leave fiber loose on a suspended ceiling, where it can be damaged or displaced.

Plan how each wall or floor opening will be sealed before making the penetration. Premises cabling requires fire-stopping at penetrations of walls and floors; use a system approved for the applicable building assembly and local code. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so use a qualified installer when the correct fire-stop method is unclear.

Pull the cable without damaging it

  1. Clear and inspect the entire pathway, including bends and pull points. Remove snags and confirm the route is large enough for the cable and any connector that must pass through it.
  2. Attach the pull rope or grip to the cable’s designated strength members or other manufacturer-approved point. Do not pull directly on the fiber or an unapproved part of the jacket.
  3. Pull steadily, without twisting, and stay below the cable’s maximum pulling tension. If the cable binds or the pull becomes tight, stop and correct the pathway rather than forcing it.
  4. For a long pull, stage the cable in figure-eight loops to reduce twist. Keep it off sharp edges and do not kink or crush it.
  5. Secure the installed run with hook-and-loop ties or hand-snug conventional ties. Tight ties can deform the cable and cause optical problems.

A cable can suffer a break or excess signal loss even when its outer jacket appears intact. Avoid tight corners, crushing, and sharp kinks throughout installation and afterward.

Keep bends within the cable’s limits

The cable manufacturer’s specification is the controlling limit. As a general rule, the Fiber Optic Association (FOA) gives a minimum bend radius of 20 times the cable’s outside diameter while it is under pulling tension and 10 times the diameter after installation. Some cable designs specify different values, so check the cable data sheet before pulling.

For example, under that general rule, a 3 mm cable needs at least a 60 mm bend radius while pulling and 30 mm after installation. Radius is measured from the center of the bend; a pulley’s diameter is twice its radius. Do not use a tight pulley or corner just because its diameter seems close to the listed radius.

Terminate, label, and test the run

End the run in a termination box, outlet, rack, or patch panel that protects the fiber and matches the connector and equipment. FOA notes that 900-micron tight-buffered distribution fibers need closed termination panels for protection, while terminated simplex or zipcord cables may use open panels. Label both ends so the run can be identified later.

Test the completed optical link with suitable equipment rather than relying on the appearance of the cable or a lit indicator alone. If the route requires splicing or polishing, passes through concealed spaces, or needs optical-loss testing you cannot perform, use a qualified fiber installer.

When DIY makes sense—and when to hire help

Approach Best fit Main trade-off
DIY pull through an accessible, prepared pathway A straightforward route where the provider permits the planned ONT location and you can follow the cable specifications. You are responsible for avoiding cable damage, supporting the run, fire-stopping penetrations, and arranging suitable testing.
Hire a qualified fiber installer Routes involving concealed or difficult access, required splicing or polishing, uncertain fire-rated penetrations, or optical testing beyond your equipment. Installation cost and availability vary; verify the provider’s requirements and the installer’s scope before work begins.

For a simple run, careful pathway preparation and gentle handling are more important than pulling hard or quickly. For work that involves building penetrations, concealed pathways, or fiber termination beyond your experience, professional installation reduces the risk of a damaged link or an improperly sealed opening.
