A Chrome extension may offer a way to move content into that workflow, but Medium’s published guidance does not name or validate a particular extension. For an already-published webpage, Medium also offers an import-by-URL tool; that is a separate route with different behavior.
Can you publish to Medium without an API?
Yes. Medium’s documented no-API route is to sign in, create a draft in its web editor, and publish from there. Medium’s Help Center says it will issue no new API integration tokens and allow no new integrations, while noting that existing tokens continue to work. That policy does not mean all API use has stopped. See Medium’s API/Importing guidance.
Medium’s editor is the supported route described in its help pages; the pages reviewed do not establish that a Chrome extension is required, endorsed, or compatible. An extension can only be assessed on its own documented and verifiable capabilities.
How to get a draft into Medium without an integration
- Sign in to Medium. Medium requires signing in to write and publish.
- Open the web editor. Select Write to create a new draft, as described in Medium’s first-story instructions.
- Transfer the content. Paste in text from your document or other source. Medium says drafts save automatically.
- Restore formatting and media. Check headings, links, images, embeds, and any other elements that did not carry over, then use the editor’s formatting and media controls. For a failed webpage import, Medium specifically recommends moving the content into a new draft and adding missing images or embeds manually; see its import troubleshooting steps.
- Review and publish. Use the publishing menu to check the story settings and publish when ready.
Only transfer material you have the right to publish. If a post is being republished from another site, consider whether a canonical link is appropriate for that situation.

When to use Medium’s URL import tool
Medium’s import tool is for a story that is already published at a URL, rather than a fresh draft being composed in the editor. Medium says imported posts are automatically backdated and given a canonical URL pointing to the original source. You can review and edit the imported result before publishing. The process is described in Medium’s importing-a-post instructions.
If the importer cannot parse the page, Medium recommends manual transfer: create a draft, paste the content, add missing media, and format it. Importing by URL is a Medium web feature; its existence does not demonstrate that a Chrome extension can perform the same task.

The Medium help pages cited here do not name or endorse a Chrome extension for publishing. They also do not establish the compatibility of any particular extension, its permissions, or whether it currently works with Medium. Medium’s publishing troubleshooting guidance says writing requires a supported browser, but does not specify Chrome versions. See Medium’s publishing and editing troubleshooting guidance.
If you are considering a specific extension, verify its details from its own current, primary materials rather than inferring them from Medium’s built-in features:

- Confirm the current Chrome Web Store listing and the identity of its publisher.
- Read the requested permissions and privacy terms, especially what content or pages the extension can access.
- Check when it was last maintained and whether its documentation describes the exact transfer or publishing behavior you need.
- Test cautiously with a non-sensitive draft, then inspect the result in Medium before publishing.
These checks do not establish that an extension is safe or compatible; they help you evaluate the specific product. Do not assume Medium endorses a third-party extension.

Which route fits your content?
| Route | Best fit | What happens | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium web editor | A new story or content you want to transfer manually | Sign in, create a draft, paste or write, restore formatting and media, then publish. | Uses Medium’s documented editor; no API integration is needed. |
| Medium URL import | A story already published on another site | Import the story by URL, review and edit it, then publish. | Medium says it backdates the post and sets a canonical URL to the original. |
| Chrome extension | Only if a particular extension’s verified behavior matches your workflow | Capabilities depend on the extension; the Medium guidance cited here does not establish them. | Verify its listing, permissions, privacy terms, maintenance, and compatibility independently. |
