Its 33-megapixel sensor, broad subject-tracking autofocus and mature E-mount lens system make it particularly versatile. The main trade-offs are important: 4K/60p is cropped to an APS-C area, its stabilization is not a substitute for a gimbal when walking, and the camera’s customization can take time to learn.
What the Sony A7 IV is—and who it suits
Sony announced the Alpha 7 IV, model ILCE-7M4, on October 21, 2021. It is a full-frame, interchangeable-lens mirrorless camera with a 33 MP sensor and Sony E-mount. DPReview lists the sensor dimensions as 35.6 × 23.8 mm; Sony describes it as a 33 MP full-frame sensor. DPReview’s review and Sony’s product page provide the specifications.
The A7 IV makes the most sense for photographers and hybrid creators who value a strong balance of still-image detail, autofocus and video options more than having the newest burst-rate or video specifications. Its 33 MP resolution offers useful room to crop while keeping files practical for general-purpose work. If your priority is uncropped 4K/60p, compare alternatives carefully before buying.
Image quality and autofocus
33 MP for detail and cropping latitude
The full-frame 33 MP sensor is a useful middle ground: it captures enough detail for substantial prints and cropping without pushing file sizes as high as higher-resolution bodies typically do. Actual results also depend on lens choice, exposure and subject movement, so the resolution figure alone does not guarantee a sharp image.

Tracking for people, animals and birds
Sony specifies Fast Hybrid AF with 759 phase-detection points covering approximately 94% of the image area. Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking support human, animal and bird subjects in both photo and video modes. This broad coverage is valuable for moving subjects and hybrid shooting, where keeping focus on a person can matter more than selecting a focus point manually. Video: the 4K/60p crop is the key trade-off
The A7 IV records full-width UHD 4K up to 30p. To record 4K at 60p, it uses an APS-C portion of the sensor, creating a tighter field of view than full-width recording. If you often film in small rooms, use wide lenses, or need to preserve the same framing while switching frame rates, account for that crop in your lens and camera-position choices. That distinction does not make 4K/60p unusable; it means you should judge the camera against how you actually shoot. For interviews, travel clips or general video where 30p is sufficient, full-width 4K is available. For slow-motion opportunities or projects requiring 60p, test whether the tighter framing works for your subjects and locations.
Stabilization and handling
In-body stabilization helps, but has limits
Sony equips the camera with five-axis sensor-shift in-body image stabilization. DPReview found stabilization very good overall, but less effective at smoothing intentional camera movement than some competing approaches. It can help reduce camera shake in appropriate situations, but do not expect gimbal-like walking footage from the body alone; use a stabilized lens, support or gimbal when smooth movement is essential. Expect a learning curve for customization
DPReview characterizes the A7 IV as a very capable camera with enhanced video and more sophisticated autofocus, while noting that its extensive customization can feel daunting at first. If you are new to Sony, plan time to configure buttons and menus around the way you shoot rather than expecting every control to feel immediately familiar. DPReview’s review discusses both its strengths and handling.
Choosing an A7 IV lens and accessories
The camera body is only part of the investment: Sony’s E-mount system is a major advantage, but lens choice affects both total cost and what you can shoot. Compare complete kits rather than body-only prices.

- General-purpose starting point: A 24–70mm-class standard zoom is a flexible first lens for events, travel and everyday work.
- Portraits: Consider a portrait-oriented prime if subject separation and a bright aperture matter more than zoom flexibility.
- Wide scenes: Choose a wide-angle lens for interiors, landscapes or tight spaces—especially if you expect to use cropped 4K/60p.
- Distant subjects: A telephoto lens is the more appropriate choice for wildlife, field sports or other subjects you cannot approach.
- Long shoots: A spare NP-FZ100 battery is a sensible item to budget for.
Check that a particular lens or battery is compatible with the A7 IV and verify current listings before purchase. Sony’s product page identifies the E-mount system.

Value depends on the body-and-lens price where you live and what you need the camera to do. The launch recommendation was US$2,499 for the body only in late 2021. Digital Camera World reported a temporary US bundle price of US$1,998 against a US$2,498 reference bundle price on September 24, 2026. That was a promotion, not a universal or recurring price; offers vary by country and retailer. Check the current price and exactly what a bundle includes before comparing it with a body-only listing. When comparing it with newer or competing cameras, look beyond the headline resolution. Check whether 4K/60p is full-width or cropped, how autofocus handles your subjects, stabilization behavior, lens availability and cost, ergonomics, and the actual price of the kit you need. The A7 IV’s strongest case is balanced photo and video capability paired with access to Sony’s established E-mount ecosystem.
