WhatsApp is reportedly testing Restricted Chat, an optional setting that keeps a selected conversation on the account’s primary phone instead of syncing it to linked devices. Reports say the feature is intended to limit access through modified web clients that might read messages and pass them to AI tools without other participants’ knowledge. It also reportedly blocks full-chat exports, automatic gallery saving for shared media, and Meta AI in that conversation. The rollout is limited to some Android beta testers; WhatsApp has not announced a general release date.
Why is WhatsApp restricting chats?
The reported concern is that some people pair their accounts with modified web clients that can read conversations, and that some of those tools may send messages to AI agents for processing without the other people in the chat knowing. Help Net Security described the mechanism this way: if a restricted conversation does not sync to a linked session, that session has no copy to read. This explanation comes from reporting, not a public WhatsApp announcement of Restricted Chat. Help Net Security’s September 14, 2026 report attributes the concern to WhatsApp.
What changes when you enable Restricted Chat?
Reports describe Restricted Chat as a per-conversation setting. It does not make every WhatsApp chat or the entire account unavailable on linked devices.
- Linked-device access: The selected conversation reportedly stays on the primary phone and does not sync to WhatsApp Web or another phone paired to the account.
- Chat exports: Participants reportedly cannot export the entire conversation history.
- Media saving: Photos and other media shared in the conversation reportedly are not automatically saved to the device gallery.
- Meta AI: Meta AI reportedly cannot be used within that restricted conversation.
These behaviors are described in beta reporting and could change before any wider release. Help Net Security and WABetaInfo report the restrictions.

Does Restricted Chat replace end-to-end encryption?
No. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default. Restricted Chat is reported as an additional control over where a chosen conversation is available and what participants can do with it—not as a fix for a failure of default encryption. See Meta’s August 25, 2026 account-security announcement.
How is it different from Chat Lock?
Chat Lock and Restricted Chat address different access concerns. Chat Lock adds authentication and hides selected conversations in a locked folder. WhatsApp’s Help Center says a locked chat can still be opened on WhatsApp Web if a secret code is created on the phone. Restricted Chat, by contrast, is reported to prevent the selected conversation from syncing to linked devices and to limit exporting, gallery saving, and Meta AI use.

As of October 3, 2026, the feature was reported to be rolling out gradually to some Android beta testers, not all users. WABetaInfo reported availability to some testers on Android beta version 2.26.39.11 on October 2. An earlier September 14 Help Net Security report described it under development in version 2.26.36.5 and not yet enabled for testers; these are snapshots from different testing stages, not contradictory release claims. TechJuice reported on October 3 that no public release date had been announced. Installing a cited beta version does not guarantee the setting will appear, and the sources do not establish availability on iPhone or in a stable public release. WABetaInfo and TechJuice describe the phased rollout.
