Mozilla says it changed Firefox’s mobile Shake to Summarize feature to stop recipe pages from being reduced to a vague gist. Its recipe-specific prompt asks for the ingredients and quantities, key instructions, time, and useful tips—details that a reader needs to cook from a summary. Mozilla reports that this approach performed more than twice as well as its previous system in a quick test, but it has not published enough test details to verify that comparison independently.
Why a general-purpose summary failed on recipes
A short overview can work for a novel or a news story: it conveys the main idea without reproducing every detail. A recipe has a different job. If a summary leaves out an ingredient, changes its quantity, or omits the instructions, it may no longer be useful for making the dish.
Mozilla says its general prompt produced concise, accurate, informative summaries for most page categories it tested, but recipes were an exception. The model could describe a dish and mention some ingredients while failing to include the recipe itself. In the example Mozilla discussed, it summarized lentil soup but did not provide the instructions.
As Bryan Johns, the Mozilla author, put it, “In contrast, a summary of a recipe website should include the recipe essentially as written.” He also noted that reducing a recipe calling for four cups of vegetable broth to “some broth and some spices” would not be adequate.

What the recipe-specific prompt asks Firefox to retain
Mozilla’s target is closer to a compact, usable recipe extraction than a conventional high-level summary. The recipe prompt asks the model to preserve:
- Ingredients as written, including meaningful quantities.
- Key steps in the method.
- The required time, including preparation and cooking time where available.
- Useful tips from the author or commenters.
One example output in Mozilla’s post also includes servings and nutrition information, alongside total time, preparation and cooking times, ingredients, numbered instructions, and tips. That is an illustration of what the system can return, not a promise that every summary will contain every field.

How Firefox decides to use the recipe prompt
Mozilla did not simply add all the recipe instructions to the general prompt. It says that could make the model over-focus on recipe formatting and harm summaries of other types of pages. Instead, Firefox uses webpage structured data to identify recipe pages and route them to a separate recipe prompt. Mozilla describes this as a quick, deterministic approach that avoids running another model pass.
The general prompt also retains lightweight recipe guidance. That provides some fallback when a page’s recipe metadata is missing or inaccurate, though it is not the same as reliably identifying a recipe through structured data.

What Mozilla’s improvement claim does—and does not—show
Mozilla says it ran a quick test on a curated set of recipe sites and found the new system “more than twice as likely” to return a complete and accurate summary as its previous system. That is Mozilla’s reported result, not an independently verified benchmark.
The October 1, 2026 Mozilla post does not disclose the number of pages or sites tested, how completeness and accuracy were scored, or whether an outside reviewer assessed the result. The claim therefore indicates a promising improvement in Mozilla’s test, but the published information is not enough to judge how broadly it applies to recipes across the web.

Which Firefox mobile summaries are available now
Recipe prompt tuning is part of Firefox’s mobile page-summary feature, but availability and processing differ between Android and iOS. Mozilla’s support documentation describes the following limits and conditions; the feature is experimental and may change.

Check recipe details against the original page
A summary is a shortcut, not a dependable substitute for the source recipe. Mozilla warns that AI summaries may be inaccurate and advises checking important details against the original. Before cooking, verify quantities, ingredient omissions, temperatures, timing, and any steps where sequence matters. This matters even when a summary looks complete: the feature’s purpose is to extract useful information, but its output can still be wrong.
On privacy, Mozilla says the summary is returned to the device. Its iOS support documentation distinguishes on-device generation on qualifying iPhones from Mozilla-hosted processing on other devices. Android documentation says page content may be processed using Mozilla-hosted services.
Why the underlying model is only part of the story
Mozilla’s March 12, 2026 account of model selection says it evaluated candidates on summary quality, speed, cost, and a preference for open-source models where possible. For quality, it used GPT-4o as an LLM judge to assess coherence, consistency and faithfulness, relevance, and fluency. Mozilla named Gemini 2.0 Flash, Llama 4 Maverick, and Mistral Small among its top three overall, while emphasizing that the best choice depended on the task and operating context. It selected Mistral Small for the feature.
Current support pages identify Mistral Small 3.1 for Firefox’s cloud summaries. The model-selection post also quoted Vertex AI serverless token prices as of November 2025: Gemini 2.5 Flash at $0.30 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens; Llama 4 Maverick at $0.35 input and $1.15 output; and Mistral Small at $0.10 input and $0.30 output. Those are historical figures, not current pricing guidance. The recipe-specific change Mozilla describes is prompt routing and task framing, not evidence that a new model alone solved the problem.
