If a multi-page print job stops after page one, first check the document’s preview and page range, then look for a printer alert or a stalled job in the print queue. The cause may be an incorrect page selection, a printer waiting for attention, a connection problem, or a Windows queue, driver, or print-processor issue. Work through the checks below in order; the symptom alone does not identify the cause.

1. Confirm the job includes more than one page

Before changing printer settings, open the application’s print preview and inspect the page range. Make sure the job is set to print all pages—not just the current page or a selected page—and that the document itself contains the pages you expect. If the preview or range contains only one page, correct the selection and print again.

2. Check for a printer alert or prompt

Look at the printer’s display and status lights. A prompt, paper jam, empty tray, open cover, or other error can stop the job before later pages print. Resolve the condition shown on the printer, then resume the job if possible or send it again. Microsoft’s Windows printer troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for low paper or ink, an open cover, and paper jams when a printer reports an error.

3. Inspect the print queue

A job that is paused, stuck, or reporting an error can prevent the remaining pages from printing. Cancel the stalled job, check that the printer is not paused, and submit a small multi-page document as a fresh test. Epson’s “Nothing Prints” guidance covers clearing stalled Windows spooler jobs and checking that the printer is present and not paused on Mac. If the new job also stops, continue to the connection and test-page checks.

4. Verify the printer connection

USB connection

Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends. If the computer intermittently fails to recognize the printer, try another USB port. Replace the cable only if the connection symptoms point to a cable problem, and confirm that a replacement is compatible with the printer and computer.

Wi-Fi or network connection

Confirm that the printer is connected to the network and that the computer can reach it on that network. Epson’s connection and printing checks and Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting page cover connection checks. If the printer is offline or unreachable, resolve that first and resend the job.

5. Print a test page to separate printer trouble from document trouble

Print a test page from the printer or operating system, or use the printer’s product-check function if available. Microsoft recommends a test page to check printer operation; Epson distinguishes a printer product check from computer print setup. If the test page prints but the document does not, focus on the application, job settings, queue, or driver. If the test page also fails, investigate the printer’s status and connection before changing document settings.

6. Review print settings and the selected driver

Confirm the correct printer is selected and the page range is set as intended. Also check copies, collation, pages per sheet, and two-sided printing: these are separate driver options, and an unexpected combination can make the output differ from what you anticipate. Brother’s Windows printer-settings instructions describe these options. If expected Brother settings are missing, the computer may be using a generic driver rather than the model’s driver; consult the printer maker’s support page for the correct model-specific driver and steps.

7. On Windows, use Brother’s direct-print test to narrow the issue

If a multi-page job still stops after the checks above, Brother provides a targeted diagnostic for Windows. The menu labels in its article refer to Windows XP through Windows 10, so they may differ on newer Windows versions or with another driver. Use the printer maker’s current model-specific instructions if the labels do not match.

  1. Open the printer driver’s properties and select the Advanced tab.
  2. Temporarily select Print Directly To The Printer.
  3. Print a small multi-page document and note whether all pages print.
  4. After the test, restore the prior setting unless your administrator or current support guidance advises otherwise.

Brother’s diagnostic article treats the result as an indicator: if direct printing works but normal spooling does not, the spooler is likely involved; if direct printing also fails, the Windows print processor may be involved. This test narrows the direction of troubleshooting but does not by itself prove which component has failed.

8. Reset the Windows print spooler only if simpler checks fail

Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes stopping the Print Spooler service, deleting files in %WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS, and starting the service again. This clears pending spool files, so queued jobs may need to be submitted again. Because the steps affect the Windows print service, follow Microsoft’s current instructions or your organization’s IT guidance. If the problem remains after the reset, update or reinstall the driver for your exact printer model.

9. Consider sustained-print slowdown only when the timing fits

If the printer was producing a long run of pages before slowing or stopping, a model-specific mechanism-protection pause may be relevant. Epson says some printers can slow after continuous printing and recommends leaving the printer powered on to rest for 30 minutes before retrying. See Epson’s “Printer Stops or Is Slow” guidance for that situation. This advice is not a general explanation for a job that consistently prints only its first page.

Use the result to choose the next check

The preview or page range shows one page Correct the application’s selection or check the document content.
The printer displays an alert or waits for input Resolve the condition shown on the printer, then resume or resend the job.
The job is paused, stuck, or errors in the queue Clear the stalled job and check printer and connection status.
A printer-generated test page works, but the document does not Check the application, job settings, queue, and driver.
On Windows, direct printing works but normal spooling does not Brother’s diagnostic points toward the spooler; treat the result as an indicator, not proof.
On Windows, direct printing also fails Brother says the print processor could be involved; continue with model-appropriate support guidance.
A USB printer is intermittently not recognized Inspect the port and cable; try a known-good compatible cable only if the connection evidence points there.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 troubleshooting options and printer menus can differ from Brother’s older interface directions. Microsoft presents its Get Help troubleshooter first for Windows 11, while spooler reset is a later step. Mac queue checks differ as well. When a menu or procedure does not match your setup, use the printer maker’s support page for your model and operating system.
