The Cosmo Communicator is genuinely useful as a pocketable writing device, but it is not a convincing modern all-purpose smartphone or laptop replacement. Its clamshell design and backlit mechanical keyboard make email, notes and light document editing practical; its 326g weight, dated Android 9 standard configuration and modest performance make it a specialist tool rather than an easy recommendation for everyone.
What the Cosmo Communicator is
Planet Computers built the Cosmo as a clamshell smartphone: open it to use a 5.99-inch, 2160 × 1080 touchscreen above a physical keyboard, or keep it closed and use the 1.91-inch external AMOLED touchscreen for quick interactions. The keyboard is backlit, and the device has a 24MP external camera and a 5MP internal camera.
Planet Computers’ current store listing gives the Cosmo’s dimensions as 17.1 × 7.93 × 1.73cm and its weight as 326g. Tom’s Guide reported 11.2 ounces, or about 318g, in its review-era coverage; that is a different published figure, so 326g is the appropriate figure when describing the current store specification. At either weight, this is a notably heavy, thick handset by ordinary phone standards.

Planet describes the device as combining “full physical keyboards with the power of a pocket computer.” That captures its ambition, but the keyboard—not the promise of laptop-class computing—is the reason to consider it.

How useful is the keyboard in practice?
The keyboard makes the Cosmo more than a phone with novelty keys. An independent hands-on review describes good tactile feedback, separate number and navigation keys, and a layout with keys small enough for thumb typing but large enough for touch typing on a table. The reviewer wrote and published a post using only the Cosmo, evidence that sustained text work is feasible rather than merely convenient for short replies.
That makes the device a sensible fit for email, messaging, notes and light document editing—the tasks Planet itself highlights. Open on a desk, the landscape display and full keyboard form a tiny notebook. For short writing sessions away from a laptop, the clamshell can remove the need to carry a separate small computer.

It is still a compromise. The keyboard is compact, so people who need a full-size layout, extensive document formatting or sustained laptop workflows should treat it as a portable text-entry aid, not a replacement computer.
What can you do with the exterior screen?
The 1.91-inch outside display is a practical part of the clamshell design, not simply decoration. With the device closed, it can be used to check notifications, make calls and manage settings without opening the phone. That is useful when the keyboard is not needed and keeps quick interactions separate from the larger internal screen.

Where the Cosmo falls short
Performance and software age
Expert Reviews found the processor too slow for demanding work. The Cosmo’s appeal therefore depends on whether your tasks are mostly text entry and communication, rather than resource-intensive apps, gaming or heavy multitasking. Planet’s store lists Android 9 as the standard operating system. Because this is an older device, confirm the available operating-system options and network-band compatibility for your region before buying; the listing describes Sailfish and Linux as supported or planned options, but does not establish that every option is currently available to every buyer.
Battery and portability
The 4,220mAh battery is described by Expert Reviews as sufficient for a day, not as a standout endurance feature. The weight and thickness also matter in daily use: a device that is comfortable as a tiny keyboard computer may feel cumbersome if your priority is a light, conventional handset.

- 👟 [NON-SLIP BASE] The stand's rubberized feet create a strong grip on any surface, preventing accidental sliding or shifting. This ensures a STABLE and secure setup, whether placed on a desk, table, or any smooth surface.
Camera expectations
The listed 24MP external camera supplies a useful headline specification, but the available hands-on and review evidence does not establish flagship-level image quality. If camera performance is a primary reason for choosing a phone, the Cosmo is not a safe pick on megapixels alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connectivity and Linux support
The hardware is unusually well equipped for a keyboard-focused phone: dual 4G, dual nano-SIM slots alongside eSIM, NFC, microSD expansion, two USB-C ports and a headphone jack. That combination may suit people who need multiple connectivity options or wired audio without adapters.

Linux is also part of the Cosmo’s appeal for technically minded owners. Planet’s support documentation records Linux-release work covering calls, SMS, 4G mobile data, power saving, firmware improvements, security patches and bug fixes. This documents active support areas, but should not be read as a guarantee of a particular current Linux version, support period or feature parity with Android.
Who should consider the Cosmo?
- Writers and messaging-heavy users: The physical keyboard can make longer replies, notes and light editing more comfortable than typing on a touchscreen.
- Field workers and developers: The combination of a compact keyboard, extensive ports and documented Linux support may be useful when mobile text entry matters more than sleekness.
- People replacing a phone-plus-small-laptop carry: For short text tasks, the clamshell may consolidate two devices into one, with the trade-off of a heavier phone and more limited computing performance.
- Most mainstream phone buyers: Look elsewhere if you want a light handset, demanding-app performance, flagship camera results, gaming power or long-running mainstream Android update support.
Planet Computers CEO Dr Janko Mrsic-Flogel described the Cosmo as “a true all-in-one clamshell communicator, with dual 4G connectivity, a high-resolution camera and a full QWERTY keyboard.” Those features explain the product’s niche; they do not make it a fit for every smartphone buyer.
Price and availability
Planet Computers’ store listed the Cosmo at £359 during an observed seasonal sale and said it ships worldwide. That is a sale listing, not a dependable current or recurring price; check the store for live pricing, stock and shipping to your location before making a decision.
