Intel gained ground after its Alder Lake launch, but it did not overtake AMD in the reported sales at Germany’s Mindfactory. Intel’s share rose from 15% in May 2021 to about one-third in November, while AMD remained the majority seller. Those figures describe one retailer’s reported CPU sales—not worldwide shipments or the entire German market.
How much ground did Intel gain?
TechSpot reported that AMD accounted for 85% of Mindfactory processor sales in May 2021, leaving Intel with 15%. TechRadar later reported that Intel reached about one-third of German retail CPU share in November 2021, based on Mindfactory data compiled by Ingebor.
| Mindfactory snapshot | Intel share | AMD share | Reported by |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2021 | 15% | 85% | TechSpot, 2021 |
| November 2021 | About one-third | About two-thirds, by subtraction | TechRadar, 2021, using Mindfactory data compiled by Ingebor |
These are reported shares of Mindfactory sales in Germany at two points in 2021. The November AMD figure is an approximate remainder, not a separately quoted exact percentage. The two snapshots indicate an Intel gain of roughly 18 percentage points, but they do not provide a continuous monthly series.
Did Alder Lake beat AMD at retail?
Not in the reported November snapshot: Intel had about one-third of the share, so AMD still sold the majority of CPUs in the reported mix. The result is evidence that Intel’s position improved at a major German online retailer, not that Intel had taken the broader retail market lead.

Mindfactory’s sales are a useful view of that retailer’s customer purchases, but they should not be treated as a proxy for global CPU shipments. The figures do not establish worldwide market share, total units sold across all retailers, or the mix of business and prebuilt-PC sales.
What Alder Lake changed
A new hybrid CPU design
Intel’s 12th Gen Core, or Alder Lake, introduced a performance-hybrid design that combines Performance-cores (P-cores) and Efficient-cores (E-cores) on one processor die. Intel describes P-cores as its high-performance cores and E-cores as efficiency-oriented cores. Thread Director helps the operating system assign work to the appropriate core type. Intel called this the first PC processor family based on a new performance hybrid architecture.

A desktop launch aimed at enthusiasts
Intel launched six unlocked desktop processors on October 27, 2021. The launch announcement named the Core i9-12900K among them and described the family as built on Intel 7 process technology. Intel said the broader 12th Gen family was planned to include 60 processors and more than 500 designs; that was a stated plan, not a count of models available at launch.
The timing matters: Intel’s reported Mindfactory share improved in the period Alder Lake arrived. That association makes the launch a plausible part of the story, but the two sales snapshots cannot isolate Alder Lake’s effect from other factors or prove that its architecture alone caused the change.

What the figures mean for an Alder Lake buyer
The Core i9-12900K is a clear example of the unlocked Alder Lake desktop chips Intel launched. A buyer considering it needs a compatible LGA1700 motherboard and adequate cooling. The market-share figures do not establish that this model is the best choice for every workload or budget, and they contain no current pricing comparison.
For a comparison with AMD Ryzen, keep the context consistent: these are German DIY-retail sales at Mindfactory, not worldwide shipment figures. The November snapshot reflects the market after Intel’s October 2021 launch, while the May figure predates it. Alder Lake’s P-core/E-core arrangement and Thread Director are design distinctions; the sales percentages alone say nothing about performance, platform cost, or motherboard compatibility versus a particular Ryzen processor.

What the snapshots cannot tell you
- They do not show a full month-by-month trend, so they cannot establish whether Intel’s gain persisted after November 2021.
- They do not provide a controlled before-and-after test, so they cannot assign the change solely to Alder Lake.
- They do not show enough detail to compare unit volumes, revenue, or the sales mix across all German retailers.
- They are historical 2021 observations, not a measure of current CPU sales or current product value.
