Nanoleaf’s MCP integration connects compatible Nanoleaf lights to AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude, letting you request supported lighting changes in natural language. You’ll need a Nanoleaf account and the Nanoleaf Desktop App, which must stay open while you use the connection. Nanoleaf documents the integration now; a September 30, 2026 report said one-click connections for several assistants were expected in October, but that timing was not confirmed on Nanoleaf’s official page.
What Nanoleaf MCP does
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant communicate with apps and services. Nanoleaf’s official MCP page describes using an assistant to control supported Nanoleaf lights through the Desktop App.
For example, you might ask, “turn my bedroom lights off,” “dim lights to 50%,” or “make my room feel like sunset.” Nanoleaf also suggests prompts such as “help me focus for the next hour” and “Create a cozy Scene for movie night in the living room.” These are examples, not a guarantee that every assistant will interpret every request correctly.
Supported controls
Nanoleaf says MCP can control device power, brightness, color, and color temperature; create and manage Paint, Rhythm, and Dynamic Scenes; play Scenes and Playlists; check device status; manage Circadian Lighting; and control supported 4D, Screen Mirror, and Sync+ features. You can create and save scenes as well as play existing ones. The feature set depends on the product, firmware, and AI platform.

Which Nanoleaf devices work with it?
Nanoleaf lists Shapes, Lines, Canvas, Elements, Skylight, 4D, and Essentials product families as supported. That list does not mean every model or feature in each family supports every MCP command: Nanoleaf qualifies that capabilities vary by device and firmware. Check the current compatibility information on its MCP page for your exact product before relying on a particular control.
MCP controls Nanoleaf devices connected to your account; Nanoleaf says it does not control non-Nanoleaf lights.

What you need and how to connect
- Have a Nanoleaf account. Nanoleaf says the lights must be connected to the Nanoleaf Desktop App using a Nanoleaf Cloud account.
- Pair and maintain devices with the Nanoleaf App. The mobile Nanoleaf App remains necessary for pairing new devices and installing firmware updates.
- Connect through the Desktop App. Follow Nanoleaf’s current MCP setup guide to connect the compatible assistant. Setup availability and steps can differ by assistant.
- Keep the Desktop App running. Nanoleaf states: “The Nanoleaf Desktop App must remain open and running while you use the integration.” If it closes, the assistant cannot use this connection to reach the lights.
Nanoleaf says a delay of a few seconds is normal: the assistant interprets the request and sends it through the Desktop App to the device.
Availability: what “soon” means
Nanoleaf’s official page documents the integration and links to setup instructions. Android Authority reported on September 30, 2026, that Nanoleaf was launching its MCP server that day and that pre-built, one-click integrations for ChatGPT, Claude, and other assistants were expected in October. Nanoleaf’s official page does not give a separate dated rollout schedule for each assistant’s one-click connection, so October should be treated as the report’s expectation, not a confirmed deadline. Developers could access Nanoleaf MCP tools and guides, according to the report.

Cost, usage limits, and missing features
Nanoleaf says, “Nanoleaf MCP is free for all Nanoleaf customers.” Messages sent through the integration still count against the connected AI assistant’s usual usage allowance; Nanoleaf says it does not charge for or control that allowance.
Nanoleaf says schedules and routines are not supported. If you need lights to change automatically at a set time or as part of a recurring routine, MCP does not provide that functionality according to its current FAQ.

What happens to your device information
Nanoleaf says MCP reads your device list, device states, layouts, and Scenes to control your lights. It says it does not access contacts, location history, or payment information. The assistant receives device information needed to respond, such as device names and current states; Nanoleaf says that information is handled under the AI provider’s privacy policy.
According to Nanoleaf, the assistant receives a secure access token, not your Nanoleaf password. You can remove the connector in the assistant’s settings or revoke access through your Nanoleaf account. These are Nanoleaf’s disclosures; review the connected AI provider’s privacy policy as well.
How it compares with ordinary app control
MCP is useful when you want to describe a lighting result rather than choose settings manually, but it adds an AI assistant and a running desktop app to the control path. The Nanoleaf App remains the route for pairing devices and firmware updates, while MCP adds conversational control for supported devices and commands.
