This area controls specific ways Windows can access a supported phone. It is separate from ordinary Bluetooth pairing and from the feature controls inside the Phone Link app.
Choose the right Windows 11 connection controls

These experiences can work together, but a Bluetooth toggle does not configure every Phone Link feature. Available options and supported functions depend on the device and its software.
Add an Android phone under Mobile devices
Microsoft’s general setup requirements are a Windows 11 PC, an Android phone running Android 10 or later, and Wi-Fi connectivity on both devices. Keep them nearby and powered on. The Manage Mobile devices workflow also requires Link to Windows version 1.23112.189 or later; requirements for individual features may be different.
- On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices.
- Turn on Allow this PC to access content and capabilities from your mobile devices if it is off.
- Select Add device.
- Scan the QR code with your phone’s camera, then grant requested permissions and follow the prompts on both devices.
If the setup screen or a particular option is missing, check the current settings on your PC and the phone’s Link to Windows version. Microsoft does not provide a complete Windows-build or manufacturer compatibility matrix, so the listed baseline does not guarantee every feature on every device.

Choose what Windows can access
After adding a phone, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices. Select the phone’s available options to allow or stop individual kinds of access:
- Show mobile device in File Explorer makes phone files and media available to browse and interact with in File Explorer.
- Use as a connected camera makes the phone camera available as a webcam to apps.
- Get new photo notifications enables notifications about new photos on the phone.
Switching off a feature stops that feature’s access; for example, disabling File Explorer access prevents using it to access, copy, or paste phone files. The choices displayed can vary by device and software version.

Browse phone files in File Explorer safely
Microsoft’s File Explorer instructions specify Windows 11, Android 11 or later, and Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later. This is a narrower requirement than the Android 10 baseline for adding a phone under Mobile devices. Only one paired phone can appear in File Explorer at a time; to switch phones, change the enabled device in Manage devices.
Files exposed through this integration are online-only. File Explorer can be used to browse, open, copy, move, rename, delete, and wirelessly transfer them. Deleting a file there permanently deletes it from the linked phone, so copy anything you want to keep onto the PC before deleting. Microsoft says deleted files may be recoverable for 30 days from the Android device’s Recycle bin – Connected device folder; that documented behavior should not be assumed for every Android device or configuration. Manage Phone Link features separately
Phone Link has its own controls at Phone Link > Settings > Features for functions such as notifications, messages, calls, and photos. Microsoft lists Android 10 or later and Wi-Fi connectivity for Android setup. For iPhone, its listed requirements include iOS 16 or later and a Windows PC with Bluetooth Low Energy support; setup also involves permissions for notifications, messages, contacts, and call history. Supported functions vary by platform and device, so review the options shown in Phone Link rather than assuming that every feature is available on both.
Pair a Bluetooth device
For a Bluetooth accessory—or a phone you want to pair through Bluetooth—make sure the Windows PC supports Bluetooth and Bluetooth is on. Make the other device discoverable, open Bluetooth controls from Windows Quick Settings, choose the device, and follow the prompts. If the PC has no built-in Bluetooth, Microsoft identifies a USB Bluetooth adapter as one way to add it; an adapter is unnecessary when the PC already has Bluetooth.

Disconnect or fully remove a phone
Turning off one Mobile devices feature is not the same as unlinking the phone. Microsoft notes that removing it in Phone Link or Mobile devices can leave it listed elsewhere. For a complete cleanup, work through the applicable locations:
- In Phone Link, open Settings > Devices, select the device’s overflow menu, choose Remove, and confirm.
- On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices and remove the phone if it is still listed.
- On the phone, sign out of Link to Windows. For iPhone, Microsoft’s path is Link to Windows > Settings > Account > Sign out. On Android, the steps depend on whether Link to Windows came preinstalled or was downloaded.
- If the phone and PC were Bluetooth-paired, remove the PC from the phone’s Bluetooth list and unpair the phone in Windows Bluetooth settings as applicable.
