For most Ubuntu 26.04 desktop users, install NVIDIA’s recommended driver from Ubuntu’s signed packages: update and reboot, choose the recommended proprietary, tested option in Additional Drivers or run ubuntu-drivers install, then reboot and verify with nvidia-smi. Ubuntu selects packages for the detected hardware and maintains their compatibility with the release; avoid copying a driver branch number from an older guide.

Before installing: update Ubuntu and reboot

Apply available updates with Software Updater, or use the terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

Restart Ubuntu before installing the driver. This gives you an updated system and a clean starting point for loading the matching kernel module.

Choose the installation method

Method Best for What it does
Additional Drivers Desktop users who prefer a graphical interface Shows driver choices Ubuntu offers for the installed hardware.
ubuntu-drivers Terminal users and straightforward automated installs Lists hardware-applicable choices and installs Ubuntu’s best match.
DKMS Custom kernels or cases without a prebuilt module for the running kernel Builds the kernel module for the installed kernel; requires extra setup and may require Secure Boot key enrollment.

Ubuntu’s packages are the recommended route for ordinary desktop use. Drivers from outside Ubuntu’s listed sources can overwrite packaged components or complicate Secure Boot. Do not mix package sources casually.

Install through Additional Drivers

  1. Open Additional Drivers. If it is missing, install the graphical package with sudo apt install software-properties-gtk.
  2. Under NVIDIA Corporation, select the recommended recent option labeled proprietary, tested. For ordinary desktop graphics and gaming, avoid a choice labeled Server.
  3. Click Apply changes and authenticate when prompted.
  4. When installation finishes, restart the computer.

An option labeled “open kernel” refers to an open-source implementation of the kernel module for supported recent GPUs; it does not make the entire driver stack open source. The GPU firmware and user-space libraries still include proprietary components.

Install from the terminal

Use Ubuntu’s hardware-aware driver utility rather than guessing a package branch:

sudo ubuntu-drivers list
sudo ubuntu-drivers install
sudo reboot

The first command lists drivers applicable to the detected hardware. The install command automatically selects Ubuntu’s best match; the final command restarts the system so the running kernel can load the installed module.

If you have a specific reason to select a listed branch, use sudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:VERSION, replacing VERSION with a version actually shown on your system. To inspect a package’s branch support, Ubuntu documents apt show nvidia-driver-VERSION | grep ^Support, again substituting the package version that is available to you.

Verify that the driver sees the GPU

After rebooting, run:

nvidia-smi

A working installation should show the detected GPU and driver status, along with information such as utilization, memory, fan, and clock readings. If the command is unavailable, the monitoring utility package may be missing or may not match the installed driver version. Check the installed branch before installing a matching utility; do not select an arbitrary version number.

Which NVIDIA driver branch should you choose?

Ubuntu’s offered list depends on the GPU and the packages available for Ubuntu 26.04. Check sudo ubuntu-drivers list on the target system instead of treating a branch number in a dated example as universal. Ubuntu’s desktop guide, last updated August 25, 2026, labels its example nvidia-driver-595 as a Production Branch driver; that is an example, not a recommendation for every GPU.

  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
  • Production Branch (PB): Ubuntu describes this as its general balance of performance, features, and stability.
  • New Feature Branch (NFB): Intended for users who need newer driver features, such as support for a new game or CUDA API.
  • Long Term Support Branch (LTSB): May suit regulated enterprise environments with longer support needs.

Branch availability and transitions can change as Ubuntu packages, tests, and promotes vendor releases. An NVIDIA website release number may therefore not immediately match Ubuntu’s recommended archive package. Follow the Ubuntu hardware-specific choice unless you have a specific compatibility or deployment requirement.

Advanced: custom kernels, DKMS, and Secure Boot

For standard installations, prefer Ubuntu’s prebuilt signed driver modules. DKMS is an advanced option when using a custom kernel or when a prebuilt module is unavailable for the running kernel. It needs kernel headers matching that kernel, the NVIDIA DKMS package, and the corresponding user-space metapackage. Check the running kernel with uname -r and ensure matching headers are installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ubuntu does not recommend DKMS for most users because its modules are not signed with Canonical’s key by default. With Secure Boot enabled, a DKMS installation may require enrolling a Machine Owner Key (MOK) during the reboot prompts before the module can load. Complete those enrollment screens if you chose this route; using Ubuntu’s prebuilt signed package is usually simpler. Do not disable Secure Boot as a first troubleshooting step.

Desktop drivers versus server packages

For desktop graphics and gaming, use the general Unified Driver Architecture (UDA) package Ubuntu recommends. NVIDIA’s Enterprise Ready Driver packages use the -server suffix and are aimed at server and data-center compute contexts; they are qualified for longer support on data-center GPUs and omit some desktop features. NVSwitch installations can have additional Fabric Manager and NSCQ requirements, which are infrastructure-specific rather than part of a normal desktop install.

Install CUDA separately for compute work

The display driver and CUDA toolkit serve different purposes. Ubuntu 26.04 release notes say the toolkit is available from Ubuntu’s archives as a separate package:

sudo apt install cuda-toolkit

Install it when your compute workload needs CUDA, after determining the appropriate driver path for the GPU. Installing the toolkit by itself does not select or install the correct NVIDIA display driver.

Fix common NVIDIA driver problems

Symptom Possible cause What to try
Failed to initialize NVML: Driver/library version mismatch User-space packages were updated while the older kernel module was still loaded. Check sudo dmesg for an NVRM: API mismatch, then reboot to load the updated module.
No devices were found A loaded Nouveau module is one possible conflict identified by Ubuntu. Check whether Nouveau is loaded; if so, follow the documented blocklist and initramfs procedure below.
Driver unavailable for the current or custom kernel A prebuilt module may not be available for that running kernel. Check the kernel with uname -r; use a supported kernel or the advanced DKMS route with matching headers.
Driver installed but does not load with Secure Boot The kernel module may not be trusted or its signing key may not be enrolled. Prefer Ubuntu’s signed prebuilt package, or complete MOK enrollment if you intentionally installed DKMS.

Check for Nouveau

First see whether the Nouveau kernel module is loaded:

lsmod | grep nouveau

If it is loaded and you are following Ubuntu’s documented fix, add the blocklist, rebuild the initramfs, and reboot. This changes which graphics module is loaded during boot, so follow the commands in Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guide for the exact syntax rather than improvising the blocklist.
