TP-Link opened preorders for its first Wi-Fi 8 router, the Archer 8 Ultra, on September 30, 2026, in selected markets including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. The United States was not on the reported launch list. The FCC’s March 2026 action restricts authorization of new foreign-produced router models, but the available sources do not establish a TP-Link-specific order or the Archer 8 Ultra’s individual authorization status.

Where Archer 8 Ultra preorders are available

TP-Link announced the Archer 8 Ultra as the lead standalone router in its initial Wi-Fi 8 lineup, alongside the Deco 8 Ultra mesh system. Preorders opened on September 30, 2026. Tom’s Hardware reported the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and other global markets among the launch regions, while the United States was omitted. The sources do not establish a complete country-by-country list, local pricing, or current stock. TP-Link’s launch announcement and Tom’s Hardware’s launch coverage provide the reported market information.

Why the United States is absent

On March 23, 2026, the FCC added routers produced in foreign countries to its Covered List, with an exception for routers that receive Conditional Approval from the Department of War or the Department of Homeland Security. The FCC describes the measure as applying to new device models. Its fact sheet says the action does not stop consumers from using routers they already own or prevent continued sale, import, and marketing of models that already received FCC equipment authorization. The FCC notice and FCC fact sheet explain the policy; a later FCC update illustrates that Conditional Approvals can be granted for named router products.

Tom’s Hardware reported the Archer 8 Ultra was not offered in the United States when preorders opened and characterized the restriction as keeping new TP-Link wireless products out of the U.S. market. That launch reporting should not be confused with a product-specific FCC finding: the sources do not establish where this model is manufactured, whether it has an authorization application, whether TP-Link has Conditional Approval, or whether an agency issued an order specifically naming TP-Link or Archer 8 Ultra. The documented policy is a general restriction affecting new foreign-produced router models, subject to its exception—not a blanket ban on every TP-Link product.

What TP-Link says Wi-Fi 8 brings

TP-Link announced its Archer 8 platform in May 2026 as its first Wi-Fi 8 platform, emphasizing reliability and lower latency. In its September IFA announcement, the company described Archer 8 Ultra as a tri-band router with up to 19 Gbps aggregate wireless speed and 10 Gbps wired connectivity. These are announced specifications, not independent measurements. TP-Link’s platform announcement and IFA product announcement describe the product.

TP-Link says the router can deliver up to 33% more consistent throughput at mid-to-long ranges and up to 24% more consistent throughput than Wi-Fi 7 under interference. Those are the company’s 2026 performance claims; the reviewed sources include no independent Archer 8 Ultra testing. TP-Link’s stated performance figures should therefore be read as vendor claims, not verified comparative results.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

TP-Link describes the lineup as based on the emerging IEEE 802.11bn specification, commonly referred to as Wi-Fi 8. The available announcements do not establish when the standard will be finally ratified or demonstrate that a shipping Archer 8 Ultra conforms to a finalized standard. For buyers, that makes the exact feature set and interoperability worth checking against final product documentation when it becomes available.

Should Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 owners upgrade?

The launch information alone does not support a blanket upgrade recommendation. The headline speed and consistency figures are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent real-world results; the available sources also do not establish pricing, detailed client compatibility, coverage in tested homes, or a head-to-head comparison with existing routers.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

For a purchase decision, match the announced features to a specific need: available wired capacity, whether your devices can use the newer Wi-Fi generation, whether one router or a mesh system better suits your home, and whether independently tested results become available. Archer 8 Ultra is a router; Deco 8 Ultra is the companion mesh product, so they address different network layouts.

What U.S. buyers can conclude now

The Archer 8 Ultra was absent from the reported U.S. preorder launch, and the FCC policy helps explain why new router models face a regulatory hurdle. That does not establish that the model is permanently barred from the country: the Conditional Approval exception exists, and the reviewed sources do not establish the device’s specific status. The FCC also says models with prior equipment authorization may continue to be sold, though the availability of any particular model or its current stock must be checked separately.
