It could help by changing how a battery cell fits inside a phone, not by making its chemistry hold more energy. Apple’s reported metal-cased battery design can accommodate unusual shapes and use internal space closely. Separately, a leak says an Android maker is testing a metal-shell design with stacked cells and a possible 9,000–10,000mAh target for future flagships. Neither a named manufacturer nor a shipping phone with that design has been confirmed.
What the iPhone battery design changes
TechCrunch reported in September 2025 that Apple uses a “metal can” battery: a cell enclosed by a rigid metal casing. Sila CEO Gene Berdichevsky told the publication the approach gives designers more freedom to shape a cell around the space left by other components. He described the iPhone Air battery’s “completely arbitrary, two-dimensional shape” as notable, and said, “You can now build batteries in any two-dimensional shape you want.” (TechCrunch, September 17, 2025)
That flexibility is about packaging. A soft pouch cell can swell, and swelling may be a particular concern at the inside corner of an L-shaped cell. A rigid enclosure may help a designer make better use of awkward spaces, but it does not itself increase the cell’s chemical energy density or establish a particular capacity.
What the Android report says—and what it does not
On September 25, 2026, Android Authority reported that leaker Digital Chat Station said an Android manufacturer was testing a metal-shell battery architecture alongside stacked-cell construction. The reported target for future flagship devices was 9,000–10,000mAh. The manufacturer and product timing remain unconfirmed; Android Authority called Xiaomi a likely candidate based on the leak’s format, not a confirmed maker. (Android Authority, September 25, 2026)

Stacked-cell construction layers electrode sheets rather than rolling them into the traditional jelly-roll form. The report describes stacking as a proposed complement to the metal shell, not as a proven commercial Android implementation. The leak is a target, not a published capacity measurement from a finished phone.
Metal casing is not silicon-carbon chemistry
Battery packaging and battery chemistry are separate design choices. A metal shell describes the cell’s enclosure. Silicon-carbon describes an anode-material approach in lithium-ion batteries: silicon is added to graphite to raise energy density. These terms should not be treated as two names for the same technology.

Silicon can store more lithium than graphite in theory, but it expands substantially during charging. Adding carbon can help manage that issue, though the resulting energy-density gain is more modest; higher silicon content can bring greater swelling and manufacturing complexity. Cycle life and heat also remain engineering concerns. Those are general considerations for silicon-carbon cells, not evidence that the rumored Android design uses that chemistry. The trade-offs of fitting more battery inside a phone
A shape that uses interior space efficiently could make room for more cell capacity, but packaging alone cannot guarantee a compact or light handset. Android Authority notes that a metal shell adds weight and can make internal assembly more constrained. The design also does not remove the need to manage battery swelling and safety.

Capacity is not runtime. A 10,000mAh rating would describe charge capacity, not how long a particular phone lasts in a day or under a consistent test. The Android leak does not provide a real-world runtime test for a phone at that capacity. To compare large-battery phones, check the exact market version, rated capacity, thickness and weight, measured runtime under comparable conditions, charging speed, warranty or degradation terms, and regional availability.

Tom’s Guide reviewed the Realme P4 Power, a mass-produced smartphone with a reported 10,001mAh battery. The publication says availability is limited to India and certain other countries. It is an example that phones with very large rated capacities exist—not confirmation of the leaked metal-shell and stacked-cell design, or of broad global availability. (Tom’s Guide review)
