Its editor and binder are intended for drafting and organizing a novel, while reported planning and worldbuilding tools extend the workspace beyond the manuscript. Some capabilities—including Word import and EPUB export—are described by a secondary overview rather than verified here against a current release.
What Scrivus is
Scrivus is framed as a local-first writing app focused on novels and worldbuilding. In a June 3, 2026 announcement, its author described it as a desktop application for long-form fiction and said projects live in a .scrivus folder on the user’s machine. The author also said no account or subscription is required. These are the project’s stated storage and access model; they do not establish that every feature works offline or that projects are automatically backed up.
The same announcement describes a rich-text writing area alongside a binder for chapters, scenes, notes, and folders. That structure aims to keep manuscript drafting and story materials in one project rather than separating the novel from its planning documents. Scrivus author’s announcement, June 3, 2026.
How the writing and planning workspace is described
Drafting and organization
The author’s description centers on focused rich-text drafting and a binder that organizes a novel into chapters, scenes, notes, and folders. This makes Scrivus’s basic proposition clear: write the manuscript and arrange related material within the same project. The available descriptions do not establish detailed editor behavior, formatting compatibility, or how the binder handles large projects.

A September 30, 2026 LinuxLinks overview reports additional workspaces and tools, including a freeform planning canvas, a Lore Book for characters and places, and an Atlas for story maps. It also lists focus mode, writing goals and sprints, outline and pacing views, and a revision workspace. These are features attributed to that secondary overview, not independently confirmed capabilities of a stable release. LinuxLinks’ Scrivus overview, September 30, 2026.
What is reported about importing, exporting, and revision
LinuxLinks says Scrivus can import Word manuscripts and compile selected material to DOCX or EPUB. It also describes draft comparison and revision comments anchored to text, with discussions that can be resolved. Those features could matter to writers moving an existing manuscript into Scrivus or preparing a draft for sharing, but the overview does not establish current release status, format fidelity, or the exact import and export options. Check the current project documentation or a release before relying on them for a production workflow.

Where projects are stored—and what local-first does not guarantee
The author says the project is a .scrivus folder stored on the user’s machine, and that an account is not required. This makes local project storage the central distinction in Scrivus’s description. It should not be read as proof of automatic backup, recovery after device failure, synchronization across computers, file compatibility with other writing apps, or long-term project maintenance. Writers should confirm the application’s current backup and recovery guidance and maintain their own separate copy of important work.
Is Scrivus free and open source?
The author’s June 3, 2026 announcement describes Scrivus as free, without a subscription, and open source under the MIT license. LinuxLinks also lists MIT as the license. These are stated properties, but the current repository license and present pricing were not verified against project files; check the project’s current materials before treating either as definitive.
