If you like XCOM or Fire Emblem, there are more ways into tactics games than simply signing up for a long campaign. Recent releases and returning classics show how broad the genre can be: some games are compact tactical puzzles, others center on mercenary squads and campaign management, and still others pair grid battles with story and character progression. “Literally never” is a lively hook, not a provable all-time ranking—but the current range makes it an appealing moment to find your fit.

What counts as a tactics game?

There is no single template. The label can cover a short encounter built around predicting enemy moves, a squad-level campaign where each turn matters, or a tactical RPG that gives equal weight to story and character development. The amount of play between battles varies just as much as the battles themselves.

That distinction matters when choosing a first game. Someone looking for the careful positioning of XCOM may want a squad campaign; someone drawn to Fire Emblem may prefer a cast of characters and a story; and someone who wants a quick tactical challenge may be happier with a puzzle-focused game than a lengthy campaign. A discussion titled “Looking for turn based tactical games like XCOM or Fire Emblem” on r/StrategyRpg reflects that familiar starting point, while its suggestions—from Into the Breach to Jagged Alliance 3—also hint at how many different experiences fit under the label.

Choose by the kind of tactical experience you want

If you want… Start with… Why it may fit
Small, self-contained tactical puzzles Into the Breach or Tactical Breach Wizards Into the Breach shows what enemies intend to do next; Tactical Breach Wizards is described as focusing on puzzle-like encounter solutions.
Mercenary squads and turn-based combat Warhounds or Jagged Alliance 3 Both feature mercenary squads. Jagged Alliance 3 also puts management of the mercenaries into the campaign.
Story, jobs, and character development FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles or Fire Emblem: Three Houses The former pairs battlefield positioning with customizable jobs and abilities; the latter is presented as a story-led game with grid battles and an undo mechanic.
A tactical problem that is not a firefight Invisible, Inc. Its stealth-and-hacking focus, along with a countdown, shifts the tension away from a conventional gun battle.

This is a guide to different design priorities, not a ranking. The sources do not establish a consistent difficulty scale across these games, and platform availability varies; check the relevant store listing for the edition you want.

For short, puzzle-first encounters

Into the Breach

Into the Breach makes enemy intentions visible, so the challenge is to respond to a known threat rather than guess what an unseen opponent might do. That design makes it a useful starting point if you want to focus on positioning and consequences without first committing to a sprawling campaign.

Tactical Breach Wizards

Tactical Breach Wizards is described as building encounters around small tactical puzzles. It belongs on the shortlist if you want each battle to feel like a problem to solve, rather than one stage in a long chain of squad and campaign decisions.

Warhounds

Steam lists The First Studios’ Warhounds, published by Brightika, Inc., as released on 11 August 2026. Its store description frames it as a turn-based mercenary-squad game set in an alternate-future African campaign, inspired by XCOM and Jagged Alliance. The listed tactical considerations include lines of fire, flanking angles, cover, and high ground. Steam’s description says planning matters more than random-number generation; treat that as the game’s stated pitch, not an independent assessment of how it plays.

Jagged Alliance 3

Jagged Alliance 3 adds a management layer to turn-based tactical encounters. PC Gamer’s description highlights paying mercenaries, training them, and keeping them alive. Pick this sort of game if maintaining a squad and managing its campaign are part of the appeal—not just deciding where each unit moves during a battle.

How to make a shortlist

Before choosing, decide which part of tactics games sounds most appealing. These questions narrow the options without pretending that the genre has one universal measure of difficulty:

  • Encounter style: Do you want visible enemy plans and compact puzzles, stealth and hacking, or squad firefights?
  • Campaign scale: Would you rather tackle self-contained encounters or manage a squad across a broader campaign?
  • Story and progression: Are a political narrative, character development, jobs, and abilities part of the draw?
  • Between-battle decisions: Do you want to handle costs, training, or other squad-management decisions as well as battlefield tactics?
  • Platform: Confirm the game’s current store listing for your platform, region, and preferred edition before purchasing.
