HP agreed to a $4 million settlement resolving a class-action lawsuit over alleged misleading discount and reference prices on HP.com. The court approved the settlement in August 2025; the claim deadline was June 9, 2025, and HP denied wrongdoing.
What did the lawsuit allege?
The case, Carvalho v. HP, Inc., alleged that HP.com displayed reference or strikethrough prices that overstated the savings on certain computers and peripherals. Plaintiffs argued that the prices were inflated compared with recent or typical prices, creating a misleading impression of a bargain or time pressure to buy.
The claims invoked California’s Consumer Legal Remedies Act, False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law, as well as unjust enrichment. These were allegations resolved through a settlement, not a court finding that HP unlawfully advertised every product or that any product was defective.
According to the preliminary-approval order, discovery included sales data for 287,784 orders and more than 500,000 screenshots of HP’s website. Those materials formed part of the parties’ investigation; the settlement itself did not establish that every challenged price was misleading.

Who was included in the settlement class?
The class covered individuals in the United States who bought specified HP desktop computers, laptops, mice or keyboards on HP.com at a discount between June 5, 2021, and October 28, 2024. The product also had to have been offered on sale more than 75% of the time during that period.
- Purchases of more than two of the same product in one order were excluded.
- Specified insiders and people who opted out of the settlement were excluded.
- The class was limited to the specified products and qualifying purchase conditions; it did not cover every HP device or every purchase from a retailer.
The deadline to submit a claim was June 9, 2025, so it has passed. The settlement materials, rather than the broad product categories alone, governed whether a particular purchase qualified.

How much did HP pay, and what did the money cover?
The approved settlement established a $4 million non-reversionary common fund. That is the fund’s total amount, not a stated payment to each class member or a fine paid to the government.
The fund was designated to cover valid claims, court-approved notice and administration costs, service awards for the class representatives, and class-counsel fees and costs. The available settlement information does not establish a uniform individual payout amount.

Did HP admit that it misled customers?
No. HP denied wrongdoing, and the settlement expressly states that it is not an admission of wrongdoing. The resolution allowed the parties to settle the claims without a court deciding that HP violated the law.

The court held its fairness hearing on August 21, 2025. The final-approval order says notice was properly disseminated and that the court received no objections at the hearing. The court granted final approval on August 27, 2025, then entered judgment on August 28 under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 58.

Those dates mark approval and entry of judgment—not a finding that the alleged advertising practices occurred as claimed. The settlement is final unless later modified by court or appellate action.
