For a jQuery-based feed display, jquery.rss has the clearest documented controls for templates and feed handling, while FeedEk is a simpler documented option for displaying RSS and Atom feeds. The 15-item SitePoint list is a historical roundup, first published August 7, 2012 and updated November 5, 2024—not evidence that every listed plugin, demo, or tutorial is still maintained or safe to deploy unchanged.

How to read this list

The 15 entries below come from SitePoint’s roundup, “15 Best of jQuery RSS Feed Readers.” They are not 15 equivalent, currently supported packages: the selection mixes plugins, demos, and tutorials. Some focus on parsing or fetching feed data; others are primarily ways to present headlines or entries.

That distinction matters in a modern project. A feed reader has at least two separate jobs: getting feed data into the page and rendering it. Browser requests can be affected by the feed server’s cross-origin restrictions, and a hosted parser or legacy API can become an availability dependency. Check the fetch route and project compatibility before choosing a presentation widget.

The 15 entries at a glance

Entry What it is described as doing How to think about it
1. jQuery RSS ATOM Feed Button Promotes a single button for multiple feeds. A feed-access or subscription-oriented interface, rather than a documented general-purpose rendering choice in the roundup.
2. jQuery REST RSS Demo Shows feed-item previews in a hidden tooltip-style area when a user hovers. A demonstration of an interaction pattern, not evidence of a maintained reusable package.
3. FeedEk jQuery RSS/ATOM Feed Plugin Parses and displays RSS and Atom feeds. A widget-oriented option; its documented inputs and display controls are detailed below.
4. zRSSFeed Reads a feed URL through the Google Feeds API and creates structured HTML with CSS classes. A historically API-dependent approach; verify that its external feed service is still available before relying on it.
5. PaRSS Displays a feed in a user-defined format or style using a UL or OL element. A presentation-focused option when list markup is central to the design.
6. jFeed Parses RSS and Atom feeds. Consider it as a parsing layer when you intend to build your own markup; the roundup does not establish its current maintenance status.
7. jQuery News Ticker Provides a lightweight scrolling ticker inspired by the BBC News website. A headline-presentation pattern, not a general feed-management solution.
8. jQuery RSS Feed Rotator Combines a server-side fetcher, jQuery AJAX, and a timer to reveal entries sequentially. A rotation pattern whose server-side fetch component is part of the implementation, not an optional detail.
9. jQuery Google Feed Plugin Uses a server component to enable client-side feed mashups. A server-assisted approach; assess the service and server components separately from the page UI.
10. How to fetch RSS Feed by jQuery A tutorial pattern for fetching and displaying a feed. Learning material, not a package with established current support.
11. Build an RSS Feed Reader with jQuery and jGFeed A tutorial using jGFeed to retrieve a remote feed and return JSON for rendering. A historical example involving a remote-feed retrieval layer; check API availability and compatibility rather than assuming the example still works.
12. How to build RSS feed reader app using PHP and jQuery A server-side PHP and jQuery application pattern. A fuller application approach where fetching and parsing can be handled server-side.
13. Discover jQuery rssFeed plugin for jQuery A copy-and-paste feed display with configurable options. A configurable display pattern; the roundup does not give enough detail to compare its options or maintenance with documented plugins.
14. jQuery and PHP RSS Feed Syndicator (with auto-reload!) A simple feed loader with automatic reload. A reload-oriented example; determine how its fetcher, refresh behavior, and failure handling work before adapting it.
15. jQuery RSS Slider Uses jFeed and jQuery Flips to show the three latest entries in a slider. A specialized presentation choice, not a general-purpose feed reader.

Best-documented options for a new implementation

jquery.rss: more rendering and feed controls

The jquery.rss project describes its purpose as reading an RSS feed and transforming it into custom HTML. Its README documents installation through npm or cdnjs, one or multiple feed URLs, limits and offsets, HTTPS mode, a configurable parser host, layout and entry templates, custom tokens, date formatting, ordering, filtering, success and error callbacks, and an onData hook.

Its documented default limit is four entries; the README also shows an example using a limit of 10. Those are configuration examples, not a promise about what any particular feed will return. The project documents Feedr as the backend parser that converts feeds to JSON, and warns that the hosted service may experience downtime. The configurable host allows a self-hosted Feedr instance, which can reduce dependence on that hosted service but means you must operate the parser yourself.

This is the strongest fit when you need to control the generated markup or want documented filtering, ordering, and callback hooks. Before adopting it, verify that the parser endpoint you plan to use is available, that it can retrieve your chosen feeds, and that the project fits your jQuery and deployment environment.

FeedEk: a straightforward RSS/Atom widget

FeedEk’s README describes it as a jQuery plugin for parsing and displaying RSS and Atom feeds. It documents a single feed URL or an array of URLs, a maximum item count, descriptions, publication dates and date formatting, localization, offsets, author display, and success and error callbacks. Its documented default MaxCount is five items.

The OpenJS Foundation’s jQuery Plugin Registry lists FeedEk 2.0.2 as released January 21, 2014, under the MIT license, with a jQuery dependency of version 1.6.2 or later. That registry record is a dated release listing, not proof of recent maintenance. The registry itself identifies as an old-school directory and points users to npm for newer plugin discovery. Treat the version and dependency information as compatibility checks, and test the actual package with your chosen jQuery version and feed source.

Choose the right layer for the job

When you need custom parsing and markup

A parser gives your code structured feed data; your application then decides what HTML to render. The roundup identifies jFeed as an RSS/Atom parser, making it a possible starting point for that separation. jquery.rss also supports templated output, but its documented Feedr backend means you must consider its retrieval and parser dependency as part of the choice.

When you need a ready-made presentation

For a scrolling headline strip or rotating visual treatment, the News Ticker, RSS Feed Rotator, and RSS Slider entries are presentation patterns. Use one only if that interaction is actually appropriate: a ticker or slider can limit how many entries users see at once, while a conventional list is easier to scan and does not depend on timed movement.

When one page needs several feeds

Multiple-feed support is explicitly documented for jquery.rss and FeedEk: jquery.rss accepts one or multiple feed URLs, and FeedEk accepts a URL or an array. Their documentation does not establish that feeds are merged, deduplicated, or sorted together in a particular way. If the page needs a unified timeline, decide those rules in your application and check what data and ordering controls the chosen implementation actually provides.

Check fetching and errors before launch

Do not treat “jQuery can parse a feed” as a complete deployment plan. A browser may be unable to request a third-party feed directly because of the feed server’s cross-origin policy. The roundup includes approaches using a server-side fetcher, a server component, or a hosted API/parser; each shifts the dependency rather than eliminating it.

  • Confirm the fetch path. Establish whether the browser requests the feed directly, your server retrieves it, or a hosted parser does. Test with the real feed host, not only a local or permissive example.
  • Handle both success and failure. FeedEk documents success and error callbacks; jquery.rss documents success/error callbacks and an onData hook. Use the available hooks to show a useful empty or error state instead of leaving a broken widget.
  • Plan for service interruption. jquery.rss specifically warns that its hosted Feedr service may experience downtime and documents a self-hosting option. For any other external API or proxy, verify its availability and failure behavior independently.
  • Validate the output. Treat feed titles and descriptions as external content. Escape or safely render text, and avoid assuming that every feed contains the same optional fields or well-formed data.
  • Test the details users see. Check date formatting, missing authors or descriptions, item limits, offsets, and behavior when a feed has fewer items than requested.

Practical recommendation

Start with jquery.rss if templating and control over feed output are the priorities, and with FeedEk if a comparatively simple RSS/Atom display widget is enough. Choose jFeed or another parsing approach when you want to own the markup, and select ticker or slider patterns only when that specific presentation is desirable. In every case, validate the project’s current compatibility and the feed-fetching service separately: the SitePoint list is useful as a map of historical jQuery approaches, not a current support guarantee.
