KiCad’s official stable Linux download is an x86-64 AppImage, listed as version 10.0.6 when checked. It offers a direct, self-contained way to run KiCad without relying on a distribution package manager, while Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian and Flatpak routes remain available. Which option fits best depends on whether you value a standalone download, distro-managed updates, or alignment with KiCad’s tested distributions.

What changed in KiCad’s Linux distribution?

KiCad’s official Linux download page says the current stable release is available as an AppImage for Linux x86-64 systems. The page listed KiCad 10.0.6 when checked. This makes AppImage the official stable download presented for that architecture; it does not mean other Linux installation methods have been discontinued.

KiCad continues to document distribution-specific installation routes, including packages for Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian, as well as Flatpak. AppImage also appears in the project’s release-candidate announcements: the March 7, 2026 announcement for KiCad 10.0.0 release candidate 2 listed a Linux testing AppImage, and the August 18, 2026 announcement for KiCad 10.0.6 release candidate 1 listed one alongside Ubuntu PPA, Fedora COPR and Flatpak beta alternatives. These were testing builds, not the stable download.

For the current stable file and other documented routes, start at KiCad’s Linux downloads page. The project’s March 7, 2026 release-candidate announcement and August 18, 2026 release-candidate announcement identify AppImage as a continuing first-party Linux channel, but distinguish it from stable releases.

How to run the official KiCad AppImage

The AppImage format is designed to let you download a single file, make it executable and run it without a conventional package installation. KiCad’s feature request describes the intended benefits as no unpacking, no root requirement and no changes to system libraries. These are design goals of the distribution format, not a guarantee that every Linux system will run the file without compatibility issues.

  1. Open KiCad’s official Linux download page and download the stable x86-64 AppImage.
  2. Make the downloaded file executable using your file manager’s permissions option or your desktop environment’s equivalent setting.
  3. Run the AppImage. It is intended to launch directly; a system-wide package installation is not required.

The project’s AppImage feature request describes the single-file approach and its rootless, no-unpacking design. The page does not establish a measured installation-time reduction, so “easier” here means fewer package-manager and dependency steps, not a quantified speed advantage.

Choosing between AppImage, distro packages and Flatpak

KiCad documents these alternatives, but does not publish a complete side-by-side comparison of their behavior. The distinctions below reflect the benefits established by the project and the distribution model; details such as update handling can depend on the package source and desktop setup.

Option Dependencies and installation Updates Parallel KiCad versions Architecture and support considerations
Official AppImage Single downloadable file; designed to run without root, unpacking or changing system libraries. Not stated on the stable download page; obtain the desired release from KiCad’s download channel. Useful for keeping versions side by side: the project’s feature request identifies running downloaded AppImages directly as a way to use multiple versions. Stable download listed for Linux x86-64. KiCad’s tested-distribution support policy still applies.
Distribution-specific package Installed through a route for a distribution such as Ubuntu, Fedora or Debian. Depends on the package source and distribution; not stated as a common schedule by KiCad. The project’s feature request says existing packages did not support parallel versions. Choose the package route documented for your distribution, and consult KiCad’s tested-distribution list for support coverage.
Flatpak KiCad documents Flatpak as an alternative installation route. Not stated as a common schedule by KiCad. The project’s feature request says Flatpak did not support parallel versions in the context described by that request. Flatpak is an available route, but the stable download page’s explicit architecture statement applies to the AppImage.

AppImage is a reasonable fit if you want a standalone download or need to run an older KiCad version without replacing your main installation. A distribution package may suit you better if you prefer installing software through your distro’s package workflow. Flatpak remains another documented option. The available KiCad sources do not establish comparative resource use, a universal update cadence, or benchmarked installation times.

Can you run two KiCad versions on Linux?

The project has specifically identified parallel version use as a reason for AppImage support. Its feature request says the existing package and Flatpak routes discussed there did not support installing multiple versions in parallel, while an AppImage could be downloaded and run directly. Keeping a separate AppImage can therefore help when you need to open an older project with a particular KiCad version while leaving your primary installation in place.

This describes the use case, not a guarantee that every pair of KiCad releases or every desktop configuration will coexist without issues. Keep the files clearly named by version and launch the one you intend to use.

Which Linux distributions does KiCad support?

KiCad’s system requirements page lists Linux distributions tested with the stable release. The project’s support policy says that problems on an unsupported platform must first be reproduced on an officially supported distribution before KiCad will address them.

That policy matters even when using an AppImage: packaging KiCad as a self-contained file does not make every Linux distribution officially supported or eliminate all compatibility concerns. If an issue occurs, check the tested-distribution list and determine whether it also occurs on a supported system before treating it as a KiCad defect.
