The “Chrono Trigger HD-2D overhaul” is a fan-made video concept—not a released remake or playable full-game mod. In a June 21, 2023 report, Vandal described creator Dott’s work as a short visual demonstration and said no playable demo was planned. A separate, downloadable fan project recreates one location, the End of Time, but it is not Dott’s concept or a complete game.
Is the Chrono Trigger HD-2D concept playable?
No. Dott’s project was reported as a video imagining Chrono Trigger with an HD-2D visual treatment. The June 2023 report said no playable demo was planned, so the video should not be mistaken for a remake you can download and play. Vandal’s report on Dott’s concept is the source for that project’s format and availability at the time.
There is a separate fan-made download: creator tyanuziello lists a Windows project on itch.io that recreates the End of Time scene in Godot. It is a scene recreation, not a full Chrono Trigger remake, and the page does not identify it as Dott’s work. The itch.io page lists it as name-your-own-price.

The third project is unrelated to Dott’s HD-2D video. DSOGaming’s report describes its distinct third-person approach and release status as of October 26, 2025.

What HD-2D means—and what it does not tell us about Dott’s video
HD-2D places pixel-art characters and objects in richly rendered 3D environments, using elements such as lighting and camera movement to give the scene depth. The term is associated with official Square Enix games, but a visual resemblance does not establish that a fan concept uses Square Enix assets, code, or a development team.
In an August 22, 2023 interview with the Octopath Traveler II developers, Square Enix producer Masashi Takahashi explained one motivation for the style: “Although we wanted to create a 2D pixel game, which some people might consider a classic style, we were concerned that others might see it as just plain old and outdated.” The interview discusses the official game’s production, not Dott’s process. Its developers describe the challenge of integrating pixel-art characters—which can look like flat sheets—with predominantly 3D backgrounds, lighting, and camera movement.

What official Chrono Trigger version can you play?
Square Enix lists an official digital version of Chrono Trigger for Steam. Its store description centers on Crono meeting Marle at the Millennial Fair, a teleportation accident, and a journey through different eras. The listing also describes updated controls, higher-resolution graphics and sound, and the Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum dungeons. Its combat includes Active Time Battle Version 2 and combination Tech attacks. These are features of the official Steam edition, not of the fan-made video concept.

LIVE A LIVE is a clear official comparison: Square Enix described its revival as using the same HD-2D visual style as Octopath Traveler and announced PlayStation and Steam availability. That makes it an example of an actual game released in the style—not evidence that Square Enix has announced a Chrono Trigger remake.
Square Enix’s LIVE A LIVE announcement covers the HD-2D presentation and platforms. Octopath Traveler II is another official example; the developer interview identifies it as a Square Enix and Acquire game and, in its August 2023 context, lists PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

What Square Enix’s fan-content guidance says
Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger content guidelines, last updated April 10, 2025, permit specified noncommercial sharing of gameplay videos and images. They also reserve the company’s right to object and request takedowns, and restrict altering shared materials and certain other uses. The guidance describes Square Enix’s stated conditions; it is not, by itself, a determination about whether a particular fan project complies with them.
