Sysco reported that a cyberattack exposed personal information belonging to 126,243 people, according to the Office of the Maine Attorney General. The information included names and Social Security numbers. Sysco said the incident did not interrupt its operations or customer service, and it offered affected individuals 24 months of credit monitoring and fraud-remediation services at the time.

What information was exposed?
The Maine notice identifies names in combination with Social Security numbers. SecurityWeek reported that Sysco’s notifications also referred to account numbers, other payroll information, and data related to customers and suppliers. The notice does not establish that every affected person had every listed category exposed.
When did the Sysco cyberattack happen?
- January 14, 2023: The date listed for the start of unauthorized access.
- March 5, 2023: Sysco discovered the breach.
- May 2023: Disclosure and notifications became public; SecurityWeek published its account on May 22.
The dates indicate that access began roughly seven weeks before discovery. The sources do not provide a precise date when the unauthorized access ended.

Did the incident disrupt Sysco’s business?
Sysco said the attack did not affect operational systems, customer service, or related business functions and did not cause service interruptions. The reported impact was the exposure of data, rather than a publicly reported shutdown of food distribution operations.
What did Sysco do, and what protection did it offer?
Sysco said it notified law enforcement and investigated with outside cybersecurity support. The Maine record says potentially affected individuals were offered 24 months of Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring and fraud-remediation services. That was the offer associated with the 2023 notice; the record does not establish that enrollment remains available now.

What should affected people do?
- Check the original notification. If you received a letter from Sysco, use its instructions to determine what information was involved in your case and whether any enrollment deadlines applied.
- Review account activity. Watch bank, credit-card, and other relevant accounts for unfamiliar transactions or changes, particularly if your notice referenced account or payroll information.
- Protect your Social Security number. If your notice says it was exposed, consider placing a free credit freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. A freeze restricts access to your credit file for many new applications; it does not prevent misuse of existing accounts.
- Be alert for targeted scams. Treat unexpected messages requesting personal details, passwords, or payment with caution. Verify requests using contact information you find independently, not links or phone numbers in an unsolicited message.
- Report suspected identity theft. If you find misuse, contact the affected financial institution and use the Federal Trade Commission’s identity-theft recovery guidance at IdentityTheft.gov.
What is not known about the attack?
The cited reports do not establish how the attackers first got in, what malware—if any—was used, whether a ransom was demanded, or who was responsible. SecurityWeek said the investigation was continuing when it published its May 2023 report. Sysco’s notification wording, as quoted by SecurityWeek, said that “the threat actor gained access to our systems without authorization and claimed to have acquired certain data.” That statement describes an attacker’s claim, not independent confirmation of every item allegedly taken.
