Yes—some iPhones can use Starlink satellite service through a participating mobile carrier, but this is separate from Apple’s built-in satellite features. Carrier-provided satellite support starts with iPhone 13 or later, while Apple’s own satellite features require iPhone 14 or later. Availability depends on your carrier, country, plan and software, so an iPhone that meets the model requirement is not guaranteed to connect.

What “Starlink on iPhone” means

This is not a direct Apple-and-SpaceX service that every iPhone can access. Starlink’s Direct to Cell system works with mobile-network partners. SpaceX says those partners provide LTE spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range, allowing Starlink satellites to function as a roaming network partner. On a compatible iPhone, access is therefore a carrier-provided feature, subject to that operator’s availability and terms.

SpaceX’s 2025 service document says the FCC approved commercial Starlink Direct to Cell service in the United States in November 2024. It identifies T-Mobile in the U.S. and One NZ in New Zealand, while describing testing or planned expansion elsewhere. That does not establish service availability with every carrier or in every location in those countries.

Which iPhones can use carrier satellite features?

Apple Support says carrier-provided satellite features require an iPhone 13 or later, the latest iOS, and a supported carrier. Some carriers may also require a qualifying cellular plan. T-Mobile’s T-Satellite device list includes the iPhone 13, 14, 15 and 16 families. Check with your carrier for your exact model, current software, country and plan before relying on access.

When an iPhone is connected to a carrier satellite feature, Apple says “SAT” appears in the status bar. Carrier fees or data rates may apply. Some carriers may allow limited data in selected apps; this should not be taken to mean that ordinary cellular data, every app or voice calling is available over satellite.

Starlink carrier service versus Apple’s built-in satellite features

Apple’s built-in satellite features and a carrier’s Starlink service are separate options. Apple says its own satellite features use Globalstar. Carrier-provided features may use partnerships such as Starlink. Their device requirements, providers and supported capabilities differ.

Feature Apple built-in satellite features Carrier-provided satellite features, including Starlink partnerships
Satellite provider Globalstar, according to Apple Support. A mobile-network partner’s satellite arrangement; Starlink Direct to Cell is one example.
iPhone requirement iPhone 14 or later, according to Apple Support. iPhone 13 or later, the latest iOS and a supported carrier, according to Apple Support.
Carrier or plan Apple describes these as built-in features; carrier eligibility is not the defining requirement stated for them here. Supported carrier required; a qualifying plan may also be required. Fees and data rates may apply, depending on the carrier.
Documented uses Emergency services, roadside assistance, Messages and Find My when outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Messaging is the clearest current use case; some carriers may permit limited data in selected apps.
Geographic availability Availability depends on Apple’s feature and regional support. Depends on the participating carrier and its coverage and rollout in the country.

The table describes the distinctions in Apple Support’s current satellite-feature guidance and SpaceX’s 2025 Direct to Cell service document. It does not establish that every listed capability is available in every region or on every eligible plan.

What can you do over Starlink satellite service?

Messaging outside terrestrial coverage is the clearest use case described for carrier satellite features. Apple also notes that a carrier may allow limited data in selected apps, but the carrier determines which apps and terms apply. SpaceX describes a roadmap toward broader data and voice support; those capabilities are rollout-dependent and should not be assumed to be available on your phone today.

Do not confuse carrier messaging with Apple’s built-in emergency features. Apple lists emergency services, roadside assistance, Messages and Find My among its own satellite capabilities on iPhone 14 or later. A carrier satellite service may offer different functions and does not automatically provide Apple’s built-in emergency or location features.

How to check whether your iPhone and plan qualify

  1. Identify your iPhone model. Carrier satellite features require iPhone 13 or later under Apple’s guidance. Apple’s built-in satellite features require iPhone 14 or later.
  2. Update iOS. Apple specifies the latest iOS for carrier-provided satellite features.
  3. Check your carrier’s current satellite-service page. Confirm that the service operates in your country, supports your precise model and is included in or available with your plan.
  4. Verify fees and usage. Ask whether enrollment or a qualifying plan is required, which apps or message types work, and whether fees or data rates apply.
  5. Look for “SAT” when connected. Apple says this appears in the iPhone status bar when a carrier satellite feature is connected. Follow the carrier’s or iPhone’s on-screen guidance for the available service.

What affects satellite connectivity?

Satellite links can be affected by obstructions and the view of the sky. Buildings, terrain or other barriers may interfere, so service should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement for cellular coverage. Check the carrier’s service information and any connection guidance shown on the iPhone, particularly before depending on satellite access for an important message.
