A Dreamcast homebrew program can use an SD card to keep larger game assets available without fitting all of them in the console’s main memory. The card connects through a third-party serial-port adapter; it does not become RAM, and its roughly 600 KB/s reported throughput is too slow for conventional swap space.

What the SD card cache does

The Dreamcast has 16 MB of main memory, built from two 8 MB SDRAM chips, according to the Dreamcast Wiki. A homebrew program can keep latency-sensitive code and frequently used data in that memory while reading larger or less frequently needed assets from an SD card over the serial interface.

This is asset storage and streaming, not a memory upgrade: SD access is much slower than RAM. It can reduce how much content must be resident at once, but it does not provide the low latency or speed needed to treat the card as ordinary memory.

How fast is the serial connection?

Hackaday reported roughly 600 KB/s for the serial SD interface in 2021. That is too slow for swap space, but can be sufficient to load game assets that otherwise would have occupied RAM, as Tom Nardi reported. The article does not give a separate latency measurement, so the figure should be understood as reported throughput, not a guarantee of performance for every adapter or workload.

Assets that can be loaded ahead of use are better candidates than data the game must access constantly without delay. Depending on the program, suitable content could include level data, textures, or music. The report also describes read/write access, allowing generated files such as saves or screenshots to be stored on the card.

What the DOOM demonstration showed

Hackaday described a DOOM port running at 640×480 with improved framerates while using the serial SD reader as a cache. Ian Micheal expected further optimization might reach a solid 30 FPS, but that was an anticipated target, not a reported, independently verified benchmark. The same report said he planned to apply the technique to Dreamcast ports of Quake and Hexen and publish code demonstrating FAT32-card reads and writes.

What hardware and software are needed?

Serial-port adapter and card

The required hardware is a third-party Dreamcast serial-port SD card adapter that plugs into the console’s serial port. A compatible FAT32 microSD card is also needed. The available documentation does not establish a universally compatible card list, preferred capacity, brand, or speed class, so check the adapter and the homebrew software’s documentation before buying.

This setup is distinct from an SD-based optical-drive emulator: it uses the serial port to provide external storage for a program at runtime rather than replacing the optical drive to load games.

Homebrew support

KallistiOS, an independent SDK used to develop Dreamcast software, documents SH4 serial I/O, cache and store-queue management, serial-based SD readers, and an example for accessing an SD-card filesystem. Those building a homebrew project can use that platform documentation to understand the software side of reading and writing data; the adapter alone does not make an existing game use the cache.

Is this the right SD setup for a Dreamcast?

Choose based on what you need the storage to do. A serial-port cache is a development technique for homebrew that streams selected assets while a program runs. An optical-drive replacement is a different hardware approach intended to load games from SD instead of discs. When comparing devices or projects, check the connection type, whether they support runtime asset streaming or whole-game loading, documented throughput and latency, installation reversibility, and software compatibility. The reported 600 KB/s figure applies to the serial interface in Hackaday’s 2021 report; it should not be assumed to describe an optical-drive emulator or every SD setup.
