To reopen supported apps after signing in to Windows 11, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and turn on Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in. Windows describes this feature as applying to restartable apps, not every app or every open document.
Turn on automatic app resume
- Open the Settings app.
- Select Accounts.
- Open Sign-in options.
- Find Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in and switch it on. Microsoft documents the setting and this navigation path in its sign-in options guidance.
If you use keyboard navigation, Microsoft’s screen-reader instructions say to press Tab until the toggle is selected, then press Spacebar to change its state.
What the setting restores—and what it does not promise
The option is specifically for restartable apps. Microsoft’s guidance does not promise that every installed app will reopen, or that an app will restore the exact document, page, or work state you had before signing out or restarting.
File Explorer has a related setting
Do not confuse app resume with Restore previous folder windows at logon. Microsoft’s January 28, 2025 release note for Windows 11 version 24H2 says enabling the restartable-app option turns on specific File Explorer settings; it separately identifies Restore previous folder windows at logon as the setting for restoring previously open File Explorer tabs. The names and behaviors are related, but they are not interchangeable. See Microsoft’s KB5050094 release note.

If you cannot find the toggle
The cited Microsoft instructions establish the documented route, but do not provide a compatibility matrix for every Windows 11 release, edition, or organization-managed configuration. If the option is missing, its absence alone does not establish why; check the Windows version and whether your organization manages sign-in settings, or consult your device administrator.
