Convert text dates with Paste Special Add Zero

0in an unused cell and copy it. -
Select the cells containing the date-like text you want to convert.

Open Paste Special. Choose Values under Paste and Add under Operation, then confirm.

Inspect several converted cells. If they display as numbers, select the range and apply an appropriate date number format.

The equivalent formula approach shown in the Excel tutorial is =A1+0, where A1 contains the text date. Both approaches rely on Excel being able to interpret the date string under the applicable regional settings; adding zero is not a general-purpose date parser. Microsoft documents the date serial model and other conversion methods, but its support material cited here does not confirm that Paste Special Add behaves identically in every Excel version or platform. Why a converted date may look like a number
Excel stores dates as sequential serial numbers so they can be used in calculations. In Excel’s default Windows 1900 date system, January 1, 1900 is serial 1; January 1, 2008 is serial 39448. These are Microsoft’s illustrative examples, not results of a new test. If a converted cell shows a number, it may already contain a valid date value: change its number format to Date, Short Date, Long Date, or a suitable custom format. Formatting affects how the value appears; it does not fix a date that Excel interpreted incorrectly. If the cell shows #####, the column may be too narrow to display the formatted value. Microsoft: Format a date the way you want in Excel.
Check the date text before converting a whole range

Alignment: Microsoft notes that text-formatted dates are left-aligned rather than right-aligned by default. This is a clue, not proof; inspect representative cells and verify the conversion.

Day and month order: A string such as
03/04/2024could mean March 4 or 3 April. The source convention and computer’s regional date settings can affect how Excel interprets it. Confirm which meaning is intended before converting a large range. -
Year: Prefer four-digit years. Two-digit years can produce an unintended century, and a date string with no year may be assigned the computer’s current year by DATEVALUE. Do not accept that default if the source year matters.

Verification: Compare converted cells with dates whose meaning you know, especially where the source uses numeric day/month formats. A valid-looking display alone does not prove that Excel chose the intended date.
Choose a conversion method that fits the data

Use DATEVALUE for recognizable date text
Enter =DATEVALUE(A1) in a helper cell when A1 contains text in a date format Excel recognizes. The function returns a serial number, which you can format as a date. Microsoft documents 1/1/2008 as serial 39448 and 8/22/2011 as serial 40777. DATEVALUE returns #VALUE! for values outside its documented range in the default Windows date system; it ignores time information. If the year is omitted, it uses the computer’s current year, so supply or resolve the intended year before relying on the result. Microsoft: DATEVALUE function.

Parse fixed-position dates explicitly with DATE
For a string such as 20240304 in C2, where the first four characters are the year, the next two the month, and the final two the day, use =DATE(LEFT(C2,4),MID(C2,5,2),RIGHT(C2,2)). This supplies the date parts explicitly instead of asking Excel to infer their order. The formula only suits data that follows that exact structure. Microsoft recommends four digits for the year argument to prevent unwanted results. Microsoft: DATE function.
Format the result after conversion
Select the converted cells and choose a date format, or open Format Cells to choose a format and locale appropriate to the source data. Use a display format that makes day/month order unambiguous when the values will be shared across regions. Remember that changing the display cannot repair an underlying date parsed with the wrong day, month, or year. Microsoft: Format a date the way you want in Excel.
