Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYes—this DIY retro-gaming console uses optical discs, but not in the usual way: each custom CD carries a game file and a shell script that copies the file into the appropriate Batocera emulator library. The build, reported by Hackaday on September 30, 2026, combines an Intel N150 single-board computer, a USB CD drive, custom controllers and a 3D-printed case.
How the CDs load games
The discs act as carriers for game files, rather than simply as original game discs that an emulator reads directly. According to Hackaday, a CD contains a ROM file and a shell script. The script moves the game file into the library directory used by the relevant emulator; Batocera can then list it for launching.

The maker reportedly chose this script-based workflow instead of autorun. The report does not publish the script, exact library paths, disc filesystem or format, or a complete set of build instructions. Those missing details matter: the story explains the idea, but is not a ready-to-follow setup guide.
What is in the build
Hackaday describes an Intel N150 x86 single-board computer running Batocera, a USB CD drive, ESP32-S3 wireless gamepads connected over Bluetooth Low Energy, and a 3D-printed enclosure. Custom CD labels and jewel-case artwork help make the system feel like a living-room console that expects a disc.

A 2026 TechEBlog write-up, which cites Hackaday, adds that the host board is a ZimaBoard 2 with 32GB of onboard storage, DisplayPort output and a 500GB SSD. It also reports the use of a 700MB CD-R for a game file and script. Those specifications are secondary reporting, not independently confirmed details in Hackaday’s account; the reported capacity should not be taken as a guarantee for every disc or set of files.
What the project does—and does not—establish
This is a retro-gaming project, not a claim that an N150-based build can run modern AAA games. The coverage gives no measured frame rates, comprehensive list of supported systems, or compatibility test results. Batocera provides the gaming environment, but that alone does not mean every game file, format or emulator will work without configuration.
The workflow also differs from playing an original optical game disc. In this build, the CD carries a file that is copied into Batocera’s library. A separate Raspberry Pi Official Magazine guide covers mounting DOS CD-ROMs and playing original PlayStation discs on a Raspberry Pi 4, a different setup with emulator-specific requirements. See its guide to using CD-ROMs with RetroPie for that distinct approach.

Optical drives can add integration issues beyond whether the computer has a USB port. In its Raspberry Pi 4 example, Raspberry Pi Official Magazine warns that some bus-powered USB drives may demand more power than the Pi can readily provide. It also notes that some portable drives’ spin-up and spin-down behavior may not suit emulated games. These are cautions from a different build, not test results for the USB drive in the N150 console.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The magazine’s worked setup uses an internal SATA DVD-ROM drive connected through an externally powered SATA-to-USB adapter; it names a Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7203S drive and a StarTech USB2SATAIDE adapter as examples. For that Raspberry Pi 4 and PCSXR configuration, the article also warns that overly fast drive settings or spin-down behavior can cause stutter. A reader adapting the idea should check the host’s power limits, the drive’s connection and behavior, and the emulator’s own disc settings rather than assuming any CD drive will suit the job.
Game files and legal considerations
The technical description does not establish where the featured project’s game files came from or whether their use is authorized. Rules for copying or using game software differ by jurisdiction, so this build’s workflow should not be read as legal advice. The Raspberry Pi Official Magazine guide discusses restrictions it attributes to UK law, including limits on copying purchased software and on downloading disc images or BIOS files; those statements do not determine the law elsewhere. Check authoritative guidance for your location and the terms that apply to the games and systems you use.
