Bitget says attackers exploited a zero-day in an unnamed third-party security product, obtained internal credentials and used forged withdrawal instructions to move about $387.5 million from its hot and warm wallet infrastructure. The exchange says its cold wallets and private keys were not compromised. Mandiant and SlowMist investigated; Mandiant described its findings as preliminary and its investigation as ongoing.
How did the attack reach Bitget’s wallets?
The published account describes a route through exchange infrastructure rather than a direct theft of private keys. Bitget says the attackers exploited a zero-day vulnerability in a third-party security product. Investigators then described compromised security appliances, access credentials and lateral movement into the production wallet job server.
- Compromise of third-party security equipment: Mandiant’s September 28, 2026, status report described unauthorized privileged access to appliances it called A and B. It reported a web shell and command-and-control connection on appliance B. SlowMist’s account, as summarized in reporting, places malicious activity on a service running on Product A as early as August 31.
- Movement into the wallet environment: Investigators described attackers using the compromised appliances to move laterally to Bitget’s production wallet job server. SlowMist’s reported findings also describe attempts to issue commands through Product B’s management interface.
- Forged withdrawal instructions: Bitget and investigators describe malicious packages and a customized withdrawal tool used to submit forged commands. The wallet system processed abnormal transfers because the instructions passed its risk checks as legitimate.
Mandiant summarized its preliminary findings this way: “The threat actor compromised network and security appliances and leveraged them to distribute malicious packages and gain control over the wallet job server.” Its September 28 report was labeled proprietary and confidential, although Bitget publicly linked it. On September 30, Bitget said Mandiant’s and SlowMist’s findings broadly aligned with its previously disclosed attack path.
What was affected—and what does “private keys not compromised” mean?
Bitget said the affected assets were held in hot and warm wallets, the exchange infrastructure used to process transfers. It said cold wallets and private keys were unaffected. That is Bitget’s account of this incident, not an independent audit or a guarantee about exchange security generally.

In other words, the reported failure involved trusted access and withdrawal processing inside the exchange’s systems. A transfer can be authorized by a compromised internal process without investigators reporting that an attacker extracted the underlying private keys. The public accounts do not provide enough technical detail to independently reconstruct every control or transaction.
How much was taken?
Bitget revised its estimate after accounting for additional Zcash and TRON transfers. It said the higher total reflects more complete accounting of the same incident, not additional unauthorized transfers.

Bitget said user account balances were unaffected and that its Protection Fund, which the company valued at more than $464 million, would cover the financial impact. Those are company statements; the reviewed sources do not independently audit account balances, reserves or the fund’s value. Bitget’s incident page said tracing and recovery remained ongoing, and the available sources do not establish a final recovery total.
What is known about the zero-day and the attackers?
The public accounts reviewed here do not identify the affected security-product vendor or model, nor do they provide a CVE identifier. Mandiant referred to appliances A and B, while SlowMist’s reported account used Product A and Product B. Those labels do not establish a product identity, so it is not possible to name the vulnerability or say which other deployments may be affected.

Bitget attributed the attack to North Korean actors, citing IP-behavior patterns and on-chain analysis, according to The Hacker News on October 1, 2026. That attribution is Bitget’s assessment; the available reporting does not independently establish the attackers’ identity. Mandiant described its own findings as preliminary and said its investigation was ongoing.

Bitget announced on October 2, 2026, at 08:00 that withdrawals for remaining tokens, along with fiat and C2C services, had resumed, completing its phased restoration plan. This is the latest dated service update in the sources available here, not a live check of platform availability. Because exchange service status can change, check Bitget’s official service notices for the current state before initiating a transfer.

Bitget also announced a bounty for information that directly leads to freezing or recovering the funds. It warned users to use official channels and not to disclose passwords, private keys, seed phrases or verification codes to anyone claiming to help restore withdrawals.
