A 2023 proof of concept showed that a person with local access to certain memory artifacts could recover most of a KeePass 2.x master password on versions earlier than 2.54. It was not a remote attack against KeePass users, and the described technique could not recover the password’s first character. KeePass 2.54 addressed the issue; users on older KeePass 2.x releases should update.

What CVE-2023-32784 did

CVE-2023-32784 involved traces left in memory while KeePass 2.x handled a master password. The documented proof of concept used those artifacts to reconstruct most of the password. According to the GitHub Advisory Database entry, relevant artifacts could be present in a KeePass process dump, the Windows swap or pagefile, a hibernation file, or a dump of system RAM. The advisory says recovery could remain possible even if the KeePass workspace was locked or the program was no longer running.

This was not an attack that let an internet stranger retrieve a password merely by knowing that someone used KeePass or by obtaining the database file. The Netherlands National Cyber Security Centre describes the attacker as local and says prior access to the victim’s environment is required. The technique depends on access to the relevant memory artifacts.

The described method does not recover the first character. It should therefore be described as recovery of most of a password, not a guarantee that an attacker obtains every character or that every KeePass user’s password is automatically exposed.

Which KeePass versions were affected

KeePass version CVE-2023-32784 status
KeePass 2.x before 2.54 Affected according to the GitHub advisory.
KeePass 2.54 or later 2.54 was the release identified as resolving or mitigating the issue by the NCSC-NL advisory, issued June 8, 2023.
KeePass 1.x The NCSC-NL advisory says version 1 is not vulnerable.

The advisory lists a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5. That is a severity rating, not a count of affected users or evidence about how often the flaw was exploited.

How to address the issue

  1. Check which KeePass version you use. Open KeePass and find the version information in the application’s About dialog. Compare it with the version scope above.
  2. Update KeePass 2.x if it is earlier than 2.54. The supported remediation in the advisories is to use KeePass 2.54 or later. Obtain software from a trusted source, following KeePass’s general security guidance at KeePass Security Issues.
  3. Use the updated version going forward. The NCSC-NL advisory described entering the password through another tool and pasting it as a workaround for the keyboard-buffer path. That was historical guidance, not a replacement for updating to a fixed release.

Why the headline’s “unpatched” needs context

The public proof of concept is titled “KeePass 2.X Master Password Dumper” and identifies CVE-2023-32784; its repository is available at GitHub. Its existence documents a technique against vulnerable versions, not an indication that the flaw remains unfixed in KeePass 2.54 and later.

KeePass’s developer also makes a broader threat-model point: someone who can alter local configuration or run spyware may already have powerful ways to act against the same computer. That perspective, presented on the developer’s security page, is separate from the specific technical description of CVE-2023-32784. It does not change the vulnerability’s documented version scope or local-access requirement.
