Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe steps depend on your device. On Windows 10 and 11, disable the touchscreen in Device Manager. On an iPhone or iPad, Guided Access can ignore touches temporarily while you use one app. Google’s Chromebook Help does not provide a general procedure for turning off a working touchscreen, so the right next step depends on your Chromebook model and whether it is managed by a school or workplace.
Which touchscreen control fits your device?
| Device | What the control does | How to restore touch | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11 | Disables the touchscreen device through Device Manager. | Choose Enable device for the same entry. | If several HID-compliant touch screen entries appear, disable each one. |
| iPhone or iPad | Guided Access ignores touches during a session in one app; it can also restrict selected screen areas. | Triple-click the appropriate button, authenticate, and end the session. | This is temporary, not a persistent system-wide touchscreen switch. |
| Chromebook | A general touchscreen-off procedure is not provided in the Google Chromebook Help pages described here. | Depends on the exact model and available controls. | Touchpad controls affect a different input device; managed devices may also have administrator restrictions. |
Turn off the touchscreen in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Microsoft’s documented method is to disable the touchscreen entry in Device Manager. This is reversible and does not require changing tablet-mode settings.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click HID-compliant touch screen and choose Disable device.
- If more than one HID-compliant touch screen entry is listed, repeat the action for each one.
To turn touch back on, return to the same entry in Device Manager, right-click it, and select Enable device.
If the touchscreen entry is missing
Do not disable an unrelated Human Interface Device as a guess. The Microsoft procedure does not establish a universal alternative label for hardware where that entry is absent. Check the device manufacturer’s support information using the exact model name, or contact the manufacturer for guidance.

Why Windows 11 tablet mode is not the same thing
Tablet mode changes how Windows presents and optimizes its interface; it does not disable touchscreen input. Microsoft says Windows 11 has no manual tablet-mode on/off toggle: the mode changes automatically according to device form factor or keyboard connection. Use Device Manager when your goal is to stop touch input.
Ignore touch temporarily on an iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Guided Access feature can keep an iPhone or iPad in one app and ignore screen touches for the duration of a session. It is useful when you want to prevent accidental taps while handing someone the device or displaying content, but it is not a permanent global touchscreen setting.

Google’s Chromebook Help explains touchscreen gestures and troubleshooting for a touchscreen that is not working, but does not provide a general procedure for disabling a working touchscreen. For model-specific options, identify the Chromebook’s exact make and model and check with its manufacturer or administrator. This is especially important for a school- or workplace-managed Chromebook, where available settings may be controlled by policy. Avoid relying on old Chrome flags or developer-mode commands as universal current instructions.

Before you change a setting
- If your aim is to prevent accidental contact, check whether the problem is actually the touchscreen, a touchpad, or an external mouse; their controls are different.
- If touch input is malfunctioning rather than merely unwanted, disabling it may be a temporary workaround, not a repair.
- The Windows and Apple procedures above use built-in settings or accessibility features; no accessory is needed to perform them.
