If your Apple TV remote has gone missing, your iPhone can help you locate it—but only if the devices and remote meet Apple’s requirements. You need an iPhone running iOS 17 or later, an Apple TV running tvOS 17 or later, and a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later). The locating feature is in the Apple TV Remote control in Control Center; it does not require Find My.
Check that your remote and devices are compatible
Apple documents the locating feature for a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later). It requires iOS 17 or later on the iPhone and tvOS 17 or later on the Apple TV. Apple does not list every older remote generation as eligible. See Apple’s compatibility requirements.
Use Control Center to find the remote
- Open Control Center on your iPhone. On iPhone X or later, swipe down from the upper-right corner. On iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Open Apple TV Remote. Tap the device list, then choose Find next to the Apple TV remote you misplaced.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. As you move closer, the circle grows and the status changes from “far” to “near” to “here,” according to Apple Support.
This gives proximity guidance rather than a guaranteed pinpoint location. In his October 1, 2026, Tom’s Guide account, Tom Pritchard said the interface gave him a rough idea of where the remote was, not its exact location; he eventually found it under the back of his couch after moving it. That is his reported experience, not a general accuracy measurement.

If Find does not appear or locating does not work
- Check the requirements first. Confirm the iPhone is on iOS 17 or later, the Apple TV is on tvOS 17 or later, and the missing remote is a supported second-generation-or-later model.
- Use your iPhone as a temporary remote. Apple says an iPhone or iPad can be set up to control Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD. This lets you use the Apple TV while you continue looking, without locating the physical remote.
- Consider a replacement if the remote is lost or damaged. Apple lists Siri Remote (1st generation or later), Apple TV Remote (1st generation or later), or Apple Remote as replacement choices for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. For Apple TV (3rd generation), Apple says an Apple Remote is needed. Check Apple’s replacement guidance for the applicable model. A replacement is not required to use the iPhone locating feature.
