An archived account says Tsinghua University developed China’s first IPv6-based core router and that it operated successfully on CERNET2, a test network for next-generation internet technology. The account does not identify the router’s model or give an exact announcement date, so the claim is best understood as a reported Chinese milestone—not a verified global first.

What the archived account says

A compilation of IPv6 news reports that Tsinghua University announced a next-generation internet technology breakthrough and that a Chinese IPv6-based core router had operated successfully on CERNET2. The compilation describes CERNET2 as a newly opened trunk test network for next-generation internet technology. Archived IPv6 news compilation

This is the available basis for the claim that China devised its first IPv6 core router. The surviving excerpt is not the original Tsinghua announcement, and its wording does not establish that the router was the first of its kind worldwide.

What CERNET2 adds to the story

CERNET2 provides the reported deployment context: the router was said to have operated on a network built for testing next-generation internet technology. That makes the account evidence of a reported institutional-network milestone, not proof that a specific commercial product reached broad deployment.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The account does not provide enough detail to identify the equipment or assess its engineering. It gives no model name, manufacturer, technical design, measured performance, or precise operational scope. It also does not establish the original announcement’s exact date. The visible newsletter item is dated Saturday, April 3, but does not show a year. Archived IPv6 news compilation

How this differs from the Yinhe Yuheng claim

A separate U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission report describes the Yinhe Yuheng as China’s first indigenous core network router. It says the device emerged through civil-commercial-military collaboration with 863 funding and cites a 2001 newspaper article, “Birth of China’s First Core Router,” published in Jiefangjun Bao on May 7, 2001. • 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 - Covers up to 2,000 sq. ft. High-Power FEM, 6× Antennas, Beamforming, and 4T4R structures combine to adapt WiFi coverage to perfectly fit your home and concentrate signal strength towards your devices.
  • 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 – Improved vented areas help unleash the full power of the router

That is a related but distinct historical claim. “Indigenous core router” describes domestic development; the CERNET2 account specifically concerns a router reported to be IPv6-based and operating on a test network. The available evidence does not show that the Yinhe Yuheng was the CERNET2 device, so the two should not be treated as competing names for one router.

Why later ZTE routers are not the answer

ZTE’s ZXR10 T8000 appears in later company announcements, but those announcements do not identify the historical CERNET2 router. In 2018, ZTE discussed T8000 support for SDN backbone traffic optimization and BIER multicast. In 2021, it said the T8000 had been commercially deployed with China Telecom’s Hunan branch in the operator’s IP MAN. ZTE announcement on T8000 capabilities ZTE announcement on Hunan deployment

What remains unverified

  • The historical router’s model, manufacturer, and detailed specifications.
  • The exact date of the original announcement and the full scope of the reported operation on CERNET2.
  • Whether the router represented a global first; the archival account supports only its framing as a first in China.
  • Whether the CERNET2 router was related to or descended from the Yinhe Yuheng.
