It is designed to keep a signal close to a person or machine, rather than broadcast it like conventional Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. That can make it useful for low-energy, low-latency links in coordinated wearables—but it does not let ordinary phones, earbuds, or computers communicate over Wi-R without compatible hardware.
What “wire-like wireless” means
Ixana describes Wi-R as a non-radiative near-field communication system based on electro-quasistatic, or localized, electric fields. Its technology page describes the link this way: “Wi-R-enabled wearable devices communicate through a localized electric-field channel.” Instead of relying on a conventional far-field radio broadcast, Wi-R is designed to keep communication close to a person or machine, or to use a suitable conductive structure as part of the link.
“Wire-like” is a description of how the link is localized, not a claim that the devices are physically wired together. Ixana says the field can remain close to a person or machine, travel along a suitable conductive structure, or bridge a short gap when both endpoints have a Wi-R interface. The company’s description does not establish that Wi-R sends data through a person’s body in the everyday sense of a signal passing through tissue like a cable.
Each participating device still needs its own local sensing, processing, and power. Wi-R provides the communication channel between compatible endpoints; it does not make those endpoints into one device or eliminate their other electronics.

How Wi-R differs from Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and UWB
The useful comparison is not simply “wireless versus wired.” Different wireless systems make different trade-offs in energy use, latency, throughput, range, locality, and the hardware each endpoint needs. Wi-R’s intended distinction is a localized electric-field link, while Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are familiar radio technologies that can support communication between broadly available products. NFC and UWB have their own operating characteristics and use cases.
Ixana reports notably low communication-energy figures for Wi-R, but those figures are not whole-device battery-life results. They also do not by themselves show that Wi-R can replace Bluetooth or another standard for a particular product. Rate, power, range, device design, and configuration have to be compared on a like-for-like basis.

Those numbers describe communication energy under specified or vendor-positioned comparisons. They do not account for all of the power used by a complete wearable, such as its sensors, display, processor, or other radios. Ixana itself cautions that rate, power, and range should be compared for the same product and configuration.
Can Wi-R replace Bluetooth?
Not as a drop-in replacement for ordinary Bluetooth products. A Wi-R connection requires compatible Wi-R hardware at the participating endpoints, so a Wi-R accessory cannot connect to a standard Bluetooth phone through Wi-R alone. The current material establishes named Ixana silicon and demonstrations, but not a consumer ecosystem in which typical phones and peripherals already contain Wi-R.

Wi-R may instead be considered for a product-specific link where a manufacturer controls or coordinates the devices at both ends—for example, a wearable paired with another specially designed wearable. If a product also needs to communicate with phones, headphones, or other equipment that lacks Wi-R, it would need another compatible connection method as well.
What Wi-R hardware is available?
Ixana’s current technology page identifies two pieces of silicon at different stages. The rates below are PHY rates: the page explicitly notes that its stated rate is a raw physical-layer rate, not application throughput. Actual usable data transfer can be lower.

For an organization evaluating Wi-R, the practical next step is to confirm directly with Ixana what evaluation hardware, documentation, and integration support are currently available. The published status of a chip does not establish that an evaluation kit is publicly orderable or that the chip is ready for an end-user product without further engineering.

These are company-listed demonstrations, not evidence that each capability is available in a shipping consumer product or that every implementation will achieve the same result. Ixana also positions Wi-R for industrial, medical, gaming, defense, robotics, and other wearable systems. For any proposed application, the key questions are whether the needed range and gap geometry work, whether throughput is sufficient, how much endpoint hardware and power are required, and whether locality or latency matters more than broad compatibility.
Is there a Wi-R product to buy?
The available information establishes an integration platform, not a specific consumer product listing. Ixana says YR23 is shipping in QFN for customer integration and XA-NFE3001 is beginning to sample, while its CES page describes demonstrations. None of that establishes a retail product, an Amazon listing, or a standard consumer accessory that a reader can buy and pair with a current phone.
For a business or device maker, the relevant route is to inquire with Ixana about silicon, evaluation resources, or a potential integration or licensing arrangement. For an individual shopper looking for wireless earbuds or a phone-to-device connection today, a Bluetooth or NFC product may serve a similar broad purpose, but it is not a Wi-R product or a substitute for Wi-R hardware.
