The “millions of U.S. customers” headline refers to Adidas’s 2018 disclosure, not to the later incidents. Adidas described a limited set of data tied to U.S. online shoppers; the 2025 and 2026 events involved outside organizations and had different reported scopes.
What happened in each Adidas-related incident?
| Disclosure | System and audience | Reported data and scale | Payment data and Adidas systems | Status and source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June 2018 | An unauthorized party claimed to have acquired data associated with certain consumers of adidas.com/US. | Adidas’s preliminary investigation identified contact information, usernames, and encrypted passwords. Adidas did not publish an exact count. Scripps News reported Adidas’s estimate as “a few million” online shoppers. | Adidas said it had no reason to believe credit-card or fitness information was affected. | Adidas described its findings as preliminary in its June 28, 2018 statement. |
| May 2025 | An unauthorized person stole data from a third-party customer-service provider. The people potentially involved were consumers who had previously contacted the provider’s help desk. | Adidas said the data mainly consisted of contact information. Adidas did not provide an affected-person estimate, The Register reported. | Adidas said passwords and payment-related information were not included. This was a provider incident, not a reported breach of Adidas’s own e-commerce platform. | Adidas said it was notifying potentially affected customers and relevant data-protection and law-enforcement authorities. The Register reported the incident in May 2025. |
| February 2026 | Adidas said it was investigating a potential data-protection incident at an independent licensing partner and martial-arts distributor, which had its own IT systems. | Criminals alleged that 815,000 rows had been stolen, with names, email addresses, passwords, birthdays, company names, and technical data. The figure and contents were attacker claims, not a verified count of affected Adidas customers. | Adidas said there was “no indication” that its IT infrastructure, e-commerce platforms, or consumer data were affected. | The Register reported Adidas’s statement in February 2026. Adidas described the matter as a potential incident at the partner. |
Was Adidas hacked, and did millions of customers’ data get exposed?
For the 2018 disclosure, Adidas said an unauthorized party claimed to have acquired limited consumer data, and its preliminary investigation identified the types listed above. The “few million” figure is the scale Scripps News attributed to Adidas in 2018; Adidas’s own press release did not give an exact number. It should not be read as a confirmed count of people affected by either later event.

The later reports describe incidents at outside organizations: a customer-service provider in 2025 and an independent licensing partner in 2026. The 2026 figure of 815,000 refers to alleged rows in files, not a confirmed number of Adidas customers. Adidas said it had no indication that its own infrastructure, e-commerce platforms, or consumer data were affected by that partner incident.
What should you do if you may have been affected?
- Verify notices independently. Go to Adidas’s official website by typing the address yourself and use its data-security information or customer-support channels to check whether a notice is genuine. Do not rely on a link in an unexpected email or text.
- Do not provide credentials or payment details in response to a message. A message that invokes an Adidas order or support request may still be fraudulent. Open the official site or app separately rather than following a message link.
- Replace any reused password. If a password used for an Adidas account was also used elsewhere, change it on each affected service and choose a different, unique password for every account.
- Turn on multifactor authentication where available. This adds a verification step beyond the password and can make a stolen or reused password less useful to an attacker.
- Assess payment concerns based on your own account activity. The Adidas statements described here do not establish that payment-card details were stolen. Check your account and statements for unfamiliar activity, and contact your bank through its official number if you find any.
How to spot follow-up phishing
Contact details can make a scam more convincing: a message may mention a real order, support interaction, or account issue to pressure you into acting. Treat requests to confirm a password, make a payment, or “secure” an account through a message link as warning signs. Check the sender and the request through an official Adidas channel you opened yourself; do not reply with sensitive information.
