Yes. An unofficial Wordle-inspired Game Boy ROM lets you play on original Game Boy hardware, an Analogue Pocket, or in a browser. It keeps the familiar five-letter guessing format, but its limited word checking and unlimited replay make it different from the official daily Wordle.
What is Game Boy Wordle?
It is an unofficial clone created by security researcher and hardware hacker Stacksmashing, who uses the online handle ghidraninja. The ROM appeared in February 2022; it is not an official release from Nintendo or The New York Times. HotHardware reported that the ROM was available to download for free, and GameSpot described both a downloadable ROM and a browser version.
The game retains Wordle’s recognizable guessing-board format, but it is adapted for handheld controls and does not restrict players to one shared puzzle per day.
Where can you play it?
| Platform | How to play | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Original Game Boy | Load the downloaded ROM onto a compatible cartridge and play it on the console. | HotHardware says a cartridge is required to play the ROM on original hardware. The reports do not establish current cartridge availability or prices. |
| Analogue Pocket | GameSpot reported the port running on the Analogue Pocket. | That report confirms a working example, but does not specify a particular setup or current compatibility requirements. |
| Browser | Open the browser build and use the keyboard controls. | No original console or cartridge is needed for the browser version. |
The platform details are from HotHardware’s February 8, 2022 report and GameSpot’s February 7, 2022 report.

- New and high quality.

How do the controls work?
In the browser build, HotHardware lists these keyboard controls:
- Use the arrow keys to move through the letters.
- Press Alt to select a letter.
- Press Control to move back.
- Press Enter to submit a guess.
The ROM translates the familiar guessing-board interaction to handheld controls. The cited reports do not give a complete button-by-button mapping for original Game Boy play.

Why does it accept or reject unusual words?
The initial port does not store a complete dictionary of valid words. Stacksmashing explained that ROM size prevented fitting a large word list, so the game uses a Bloom filter to check entries against the 8,000 most common English words. The creator acknowledged that this method had a high error rate, meaning word validation can be imperfect: a legitimate guess may be rejected, or an invalid one may be accepted.
This is a technical trade-off, not a different rule of Wordle. A separate 2022 implementation by Alexander Pruss demonstrated that a fuller word set was possible: it fit 12,972 five-letter words and a 2,315-word answer list into a 32K cartridge by sorting and delta-encoding the lists and replacing a library call. That work is described by Hackaday; it is a separate implementation, not evidence that Stacksmashing’s original ROM uses the same dictionary.

Does it have the once-a-day limit?
No. GameSpot reported that after a win or loss, the game automatically resets to another word. You can continue playing instead of waiting for a new daily puzzle. That changes the replay cadence from the shared daily format associated with web Wordle, while keeping the basic guessing-board idea.

The reports establish the basic requirement: download the ROM and use a compatible cartridge to run it on an original Game Boy. They do not provide a verified cartridge model, flashing procedure, or current purchasing guidance, so check the instructions for your specific cartridge before transferring a ROM. If you only want to try the game, the browser build avoids the hardware setup.
