Those are different problems. If it is an image, decide whether you want to replace the black with another opaque background or make it transparent; the right result determines the editing steps.
Identify what is black before changing anything
- Only behind a subject in a saved image: use background removal, masking, or recoloring.
- A website or app looks dark: check whether its own dark theme or a browser, operating-system, extension, or user color setting is responsible.
- The whole display is black: this is a device-specific display problem, not an image-editing issue.
- Black appears only in a video editor’s mask or alpha preview: it may represent transparency rather than black pixels in the video.
Choose the image result you actually want
Replace the black with another background
Choose this when the finished image should still have a solid background, or when you want to put a different color or image behind the subject. Remove or select the black area, then place the replacement beneath the subject. This produces an opaque image unless you deliberately preserve transparency in the export.
Make the background transparent
Choose this when the subject needs to sit over a webpage, slide, or other design. A transparent canvas is not itself a new background: whatever displays behind the image will show through. Export to a format that supports transparency and check the saved file, since a preview may show transparency differently from the final result.
Refine the boundary
Automatic removal can mistake dark details in a subject for the background or leave a dark fringe around its edges. Zoom in around hair, glass, shadows, and other fine boundaries; restore missing subject details or erase leftover background with a brush or mask. Inspect the exported image against both light and dark colors if it will be used in different settings.

Remove a black background with an online image tool
Canva
- Upload the image to Canva and open its background-removal workflow.
- Review the cutout, adjusting the brush size and repairing edges or missing details where needed.
- Choose whether to add a replacement background or keep the canvas transparent, then export in a format that preserves the intended result.
Canva describes its remover as producing a transparent canvas and lists JPG, PNG, HEIC/HEIF, WebP, and SVG among accepted file types. Its page also says the remover is free to use once; feature and usage terms can change, so check the current product page before relying on that allowance: Canva background remover.
Erase.bg
- Upload or drag an image into Erase.bg’s background-removal workflow.
- Review the result and use the optional editing step if you need to refine or replace the background.
- Download the image and confirm that its format and transparency match your intended use.
Erase.bg describes this workflow for PNG, JPEG/JPG, and WebP images and promotes free removal on its page. Those are vendor-stated details, not an independent test of quality or current plan terms. Manual masking in an image editor
If automatic selection damages dark subject details, use a mask or color-selection tool to control which pixels are hidden. The Corel DESIGNER 2021 User Guide describes bitmap color masking as a way to hide a color so objects or backgrounds can show through. The exact controls vary by editor, but the principle is to mask the background rather than permanently paint over pixels, so you can revise the edge later: Corel DESIGNER 2021 User Guide: bitmap color masking.
If a website or app has a black background
Check whether the dark appearance is part of the site or app’s theme, or comes from a browser setting, extension, operating-system preference, or user-selected colors. Change the setting that applies to that specific page or app rather than resetting unrelated display preferences.

Some people with low vision find white text on black easier to read. W3C’s historical F24 technique for WCAG 2.0 explains that author-defined foreground and background colors can override user-selected colors and make text unusable. That document is useful context about color overrides, not current browser instructions or a statement of the current conformance standard: W3C, Techniques for WCAG 2.0, F24.
If the entire computer display is black
Do not apply image-background steps or use a blanket display reset. The cause and safe recovery depend on the device and operating system. Check the device maker’s current support guidance for the exact symptom, and note whether the screen is completely black or still shows a cursor or menus, along with what changed just before the problem began.

If black appears only in a video-editing preview
In the documented alpha-channel mask preview for Adobe Premiere Elements, black indicates transparent areas, white indicates opaque areas, and gray indicates partial transparency. That convention applies to the described mask view; it does not mean every black preview or black video frame is transparent: Adobe Premiere Elements effects reference.
