To review which apps can use your microphone, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone in Windows 11. Check the system-wide microphone access switch, app permissions, and the separate desktop-app setting. These controls reduce access for apps they cover, but they are not a complete spyware detector or a guarantee that every program is blocked.

How to review microphone permissions in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. This is the Windows 11 path documented by Microsoft’s microphone permission instructions.
  2. Review Microphone access. This is the system-level control. If you turn it off, apps covered by Windows’ permission controls cannot use the microphone.
  3. Review Let apps access your microphone. This controls microphone access for apps covered by that setting.
  4. Check individual app switches. Turn access off for any listed app that does not need the microphone.
  5. Review Let desktop apps access your microphone. This separate control applies to desktop apps that Windows can manage through this setting.

Switches may be named slightly differently depending on your Windows version or updates. Microsoft’s current instructions are the reference for the Windows 11 controls and their names.

Where the Windows 10 microphone setting is

In Windows 10, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone to review microphone access and app permissions, as described in Microsoft’s instructions. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that date concerns support status, not the location of the permission setting.

What these controls do—and do not—cover

Windows’ microphone privacy settings mainly apply to Microsoft Store apps. Some desktop apps may not appear in the per-app list, so you may need to disable microphone access in the app’s own settings. Microsoft explains this distinction in its guidance on Windows privacy settings used by apps.

There is a further limitation: some desktop apps may access microphone hardware directly, including through a driver, and may not be affected by Windows’ privacy setting. Microsoft describes this exception in its desktop-app privacy guidance. For more comprehensive protection against microphone access, Microsoft suggests disconnecting or disabling the microphone. That is a stronger but less convenient option: apps that legitimately need audio will not be able to use it until the microphone is restored.

How to check whether an app is using the microphone

Look for the microphone icon in the taskbar notification area. Microsoft says the icon appears there when an app is using the microphone, as explained on its camera, microphone, and privacy support page.

Treat the icon as a useful indication, not a complete audit. Desktop apps may not always appear in Windows’ app lists, and the privacy controls do not necessarily cover every form of direct hardware access. If you are concerned about a particular desktop app, check its own microphone settings too.

What changing this setting means for spyware concerns

Reviewing microphone permissions is a practical way to limit access for apps covered by Windows’ controls. It does not establish whether a computer has spyware, detect spyware, or guarantee that every program is blocked. The cited Microsoft guidance documents permission behavior and its limitations; it does not establish how common microphone spyware is.
