Nikon’s 2026 Small World in Motion winner used an AI-assisted tool to process microscopy data, according to the entrant and Nikon. The dispute is whether that post-processing changed the image enough to misrepresent the biology—not simply whether AI was involved. Nikon initially said the described enhancement appeared compliant, then said it was re-reviewing the entry. The available reporting does not establish a final ruling.
What the winning video shows—and what Xu says he did
Nikon Instruments named Tsinghua University optical engineer Ning Xu first-place winner in its 2026 Small World in Motion contest. The video depicts abnormal beating of airway cilia associated with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a rare genetic disorder that affects respiratory function, according to The Scientist.
Xu said his team used diffractive super-resolution microscopy to produce grayscale source data, then applied an unsupervised neural network during post-processing and visualization to bring out features. TechRadar described the footage as captured at 100x magnification; that figure is the outlet’s description of this entry, not a general specification for the imaging method. TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 report gives Nikon’s account of its renewed review.
Xu framed the distinction this way: “There is an important difference between using AI to create something that was never in the experiment and using AI to process or visualize real experimental data.” That is his description of the workflow; it does not independently verify every processing step or establish that the final display preserved all features faithfully.

Why microscopists questioned the image
The criticism reported by The Scientist focuses on whether the processed display can be trusted as a representation of the specimen. Robert Hirst, a lead scientist who uses microscopy to diagnose PCD, said some details appeared inconsistent with nature. Christophe Leterrier, a neuroscientist and former Nikon Small World jury member, said the processing altered the original image too much. Cell biologist Melanie White, who uses quantitative imaging, said it was difficult to tell whether the display faithfully represented the biology.
Hirst also raised concern that viewers could get a misleading impression of the relationship between cilia and cells. He cited about 200 cilia per cell; that is his estimate as reported in this controversy, not a separately verified count. These are expert concerns, not proof that structures or motion were fabricated.

The practical issue is that an image can start with genuine experimental data and still become difficult to interpret if processing changes visible features, their scale or their relationships. For a scientific visualization, disclosure of the operation and confidence that the result preserves relevant biological information matter alongside the existence of a real source recording.
What Nikon’s rules say about AI
The Small World in Motion rules state: “AI generated videos are not permitted and Sponsor holds the right to request the original video for verification.” The same rules require a light microscope and microscope objective, but do not require Nikon-branded equipment. The published wording prohibits AI-generated videos; it does not by itself settle how Nikon interprets AI-assisted enhancement of recorded microscopy data in Xu’s case.

- The CMOS image sensor offers an effective pixel count of 14.2-million pixels (D3000: CCD image sensor with 10.2-million effective pixels) and enables capture of high-definition images exhibiting superior image quality with extremely detailed rendering and rich tones
- EXPEED 2 is Nikon's new image-processing engine, developed by refining the concepts, it maximises the performance of the CMOS image sensor to suppress noise in still images and movies and produces images that faithfully reproduce vivid colors
- The camera also makes the most of its standard sensitivity settings up to ISO 3200 (D3000: ISO 100-1600) and additional increases up to Hi 2 (ISO 12800 equivalent), with shooting under dim lighting, such as in the evening or indoors, as well as with sports scenes of rapidly moving subjects
- 3-inch monitor, 230,000-dot, low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD, Eye-level penta-dach mirror type, built-in diopter adjustment (-1.7 to +0.5m-1) - D-Movie for recording and editing full-HD movies and AF-F (full-time servo AF) focus mode for high-quality movie recording
- Vibration Reduction Technology, 1080p HD Movie Recording, Live View, Auto Scene Selector, Flash Features: Slow-Sync Flash, Flash Cancel, Auto On/Off, Rear-Curtain Sync, Pop-Up Flash, Red-Eye Reduction, Fill-In Flash
The distinction at issue can be summarized this way:
| Question | What is established | What remains in dispute |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Xu says the workflow began with grayscale microscopy data. | The account alone does not independently validate the source or every processing step. |
| Operation | Xu described an unsupervised neural network used in post-processing and visualization. | Critics questioned whether the processing altered biological features too much. |
| Rule | Nikon’s published rules ban AI-generated videos and allow the sponsor to request original video. | The rules do not resolve the case-specific distinction between generating content and enhancing recorded data. |
| Biological fidelity | Named researchers publicly raised concerns about plausibility and interpretability. | The cited reporting does not establish a final independent determination of fidelity. |
Nikon’s position has not been reported as a final decision
The Scientist quoted a Nikon spokesperson saying the company regarded the described tool as enhancement of microscopy-generated source data rather than generation from scratch, and that it did not see a rule violation based on information then available. The spokesperson also said Nikon was reviewing its AI policy and reinvestigating and reevaluating the entry.

TechRadar later reported Nikon was carefully re-reviewing the initial vetting information alongside additional technical materials supplied by Xu. Although that report said Nikon planned a community update the following week, the available reporting here does not establish that a final adjudication or update was issued. The initial assessment and the subsequent re-review should not be treated as a settled outcome.
What would resolve the central question
A useful assessment would need to establish what was present in the original recording, what the neural network changed in processing, and whether those changes preserved the biological features viewers are meant to interpret. Nikon’s rules provide for requesting the original video, but the cited reports do not publish a comparison or a final technical finding. Until a ruling or such evidence is reported, the careful conclusion is that AI-assisted post-processing was acknowledged, while the fidelity question and contest outcome remain unresolved.
