To change one app’s sound without changing other apps, open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Under Apps, find the app, unmute it if necessary, and adjust its volume slider. You can also choose a separate output device for that app.
Adjust one app’s volume in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the app you want to adjust.
- If the app is muted, unmute it. Move its volume slider to the level you want. This app-level control can differ from the system volume.
For a quicker route, right-click the taskbar’s Volume icon and select Open Volume mixer. The menu wording or layout may vary by device or Windows localization. Microsoft’s app-audio instructions cover the mixer steps.
Send an app’s sound to the right device
In the same Apps section, check that app’s Output device selector. Choose the intended speakers, headphones, or other available output if the app is sending sound somewhere else. An app’s output choice can differ from the system default, so changing the system device alone may not redirect that app.
Troubleshoot when one app is silent
If system sounds work but a particular app does not, check the app’s mute state and volume slider first, then its output device. Those are the most direct mixer settings to verify before moving on to wider audio troubleshooting.

Restart Windows audio services
If the app remains silent, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance suggests restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder through the Services app, then testing the app again. These are later diagnostic steps, not necessary for a routine slider adjustment. See Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting steps.
Update the audio driver if needed
If restarting the services does not resolve the problem, Microsoft also recommends updating the audio driver. Driver steps depend on the audio device and system; use the troubleshooting guidance for your device rather than installing an unrelated audio utility.

If an app is audible but too quiet
Check both the app slider and the system volume slider, and make sure neither is muted. If both are raised and the sound is still low, test with audio enhancements turned off or try another output audio format. Change one setting at a time and listen again so you can identify whether it helped. Microsoft lists these checks in its guide to fixing low or quiet sound in Windows.

What to check first
- Only one app is quiet or silent: check that app’s slider and mute state.
- The app plays through the wrong device: check its Output device selection in Volume mixer.
- All audio is quiet: check the system slider as well as the app slider.
- The mixer settings look right but an app remains silent: move on to audio services, then the audio driver.
- Audio is still low after checking both sliders: test audio enhancements and output format separately.
